Zizou Bergs (born 3 June 1999) is a Belgian professional tennis player. He has a career high ATP singles ranking of World No. 102 achieved on 20 May 2024. He also has a career high ATP doubles ranking of World No. 265 achieved on 27 November 2023. He is currently the No. 1 Belgian singles tennis player.[1]
Professional career[edit]
2020: ATP debut and first win[edit]
Bergs made his ATP main draw debut at the 2020 European Open after receiving a wildcard for the singles main draw. In the first round, he recorded his first ATP victory by defeating Albert Ramos Viñolas in straight sets,[2][3] before pushing world No. 17 Karen Khachanov to three sets.[4]
2021: Three ATP Challenger titles, top 200 debut[edit]
Bergs won his first Challenger title at the 2021 Saint Petersburg Challenger in March and later on in the month, would win his second Challenger title at the 2021 Lille Challenger. In June, he won his third Challenger title at the 2021 Almaty Challenger.[5]
After a second round showing at the 2021 Swiss Open Gstaad where he defeated fellow qualifier Oscar Otte in the first round, he reached the top 200 at World No. 196 on 26 July 2021.
2022: Fourth Challenger title, Grand Slam & top 150 debut[edit]
He reached his first final of the season at the Saint-Brieuc Challenger losing to Jack Draper.[6]
In May, he reached his second Challenger final of the season at the 2022 Saturn Oil Open in Troisdorf, Germany, where he lost to Lukáš Klein.[7]
Ranked No. 207, he won the 2022 Ilkley Trophy as a qualifier defeating lucky loser Alexei Popyrin in the semifinals[8][9][10] and Jack Sock in the final. As a result he won the last 2022 Wimbledon wildcard where he made his Grand Slam debut.[11] He also climbed more than 60 positions up the rankings to a new career-high of World No. 146 on 20 June 2022.
2023: United Cup, Australian Open and Masters debuts, top 125[edit]
On his debut as the No. 2 player from Belgium, he lost his two singles matches at the inaugural 2023 United Cup against world No. 196 Bulgarian Dimitar Kuzmanov and world No. 803 Greek Stefanos Sakellaridis.[12] He made his debut by qualifying for the main draw at the 2023 Australian Open defeating another Bulgarian Adrian Andreev.[13] In the first round, he lost to Serbian Laslo Djere.
He received a wildcard for the 2023 Miami Open main draw but lost to lucky loser Thanasi Kokkinakis.[14] He entered the 2023 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships also as a lucky loser into the second round after the late withdrawal of third seed Brandon Nakashima but lost to Cristian Garin. He entered the 2023 Ilkley Trophy Challenger as the defending champion[15] but lost to Denis Kudla in the second round.
After a couple of months away from the Tour due to a torn ligament in his left wrist, he returned at the 2023 Chengdu Open after he received a wildcard, but lost to Dušan Lajović. He also played at his home tournament, the 2023 European Open in singles qualifying and in doubles with Tibo Colson, and at the Calgary Challenger, Canada where he reached the quarterfinals.[16] He won his sixth Challenger in Drummondville, Canada and his seventh in Yokkaichi, Japan.
2024: French Open debut, top 105[edit]
In April, Bergs won his first match of the season on the ATP Tour in Houston, defeating qualifier Patrick Kypson in the first round before losing to top seed and eventual champion Ben Shelton in the second round.[17][18] Bergs then reached back-to-back finals on the ATP Challenger Tour in Sarasota, losing to Thanasi Kokkinakis in the final[19] and then as the defending champion in Tallahassee, defeating Mitchell Krueger in the final to win his eighth Challenger title.[20]
He received a wildcard for the main draw at the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open where he made his debut.[21] Also on his debut, he qualified for the main draw at the Italian Open in Rome where he lost to former 10-times champion Rafael Nadal in the first round.[22][23]
In May, ranked No. 102, Bergs made his French Open debut.[24]
