Sirs, I need help to stop an article being deleated! The Blatric is a new dance craze that is hitting the Edinburgh, UK dance scene. We need help in keeping this article. Please can anyone help by adding to the discussion on that page. This is has several hundreds of followers in edinburgh, we need help! infobox dancer

I started an infobox: template:infobox dancer, which is just an adaptation from template:football player infobox. I ran into a few problems though.

  1. I know almost nothing of templates and infoboxes.
  2. I know almost nothing of dance.

Forlane and Furlana

I think these may be the same thing, but the descriptions are somewhat unclear (they are both very short). I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone is familiar with 17th century dances and can advise on if they should be merged, or if not, how they can be better distinguished. There is discussion on Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 January 11 of the categories for ABT and NYCB dancers and Ballets Russes (and Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo) choreographers. Categories:Dance styles (or genres)

Looking at the Category:Dances it appears that a category such as Category:Dance styles in Category:Dance similar to Category:Music genres would be useful. I did wonder about genres but the usage did not seem quite right. The category would include styles like ballet and allow particular dance and dance repertoire items to be separated. Master Juba at peer review

Hello! I've just put Master Juba up at peer review. Master Juba was a black American dancer who lived in the 19th century. He is, according to many authorities, the father of tap dancing and made a profound impact on American dance styles. He was also significant as the first black man to get top billing over white performers. At any rate, I thought there might be some knowledgeable (or just curious) folks following this page who might be interested in giving some feedback. The review page can be found here. Infobox Dancer

Template:Infobox Dancer still needs some work, but I've now sorted out some documentation so it's a bit more user-friendly. It still shows signs of its previous existence as a football template, but perhaps some dance fans might want to think about what information it would be useful to include in the infobox. If you don't fancy editing it yourself, the template builders would be delighted to help you. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles. Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Image needs replacement

Hello all... An image used on the WikiProject page, specifically Image:Hey for four.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. The image is not used anywhere else, and it really is serving no real nessesary purpose here (in my opinion). I wonder if a concensus of participants here could reach a determination to remove it. If so, it can be nominated at WP:IfD. If there appears to be a need for this drawing here or on an article, it would be best if it was recreated, uploaded and properly licensed; then this image could be deleted at WP:IfD as obsolete. Correct Usage of Leotard image

Hello. I uploaded a long time ago an image of me to be used in the leotard article in view that the old one was inappropriate. I checked and saw that it is now used it some more articles, like the german leotard or the french ballet term. However its also in the Gravure idol article which is totally irrelative. I dont speak french so I would be grateful is someone deleted it from the french wiki. Proposed deletion / article in sad need of some help

Poor neglected "cotillion" has been merged with what is currently the master article on the subject, which is all about debutante balls, and nothing to do with the eighteenth-century dance form! The article itself was asked to be deleted, although I don't see it in the actual deletions nomination list, so I think the tag could be removed. As of now, though, the article Cotillion_(dance) has nothing in it but three meager paragraphs which I stole from the article on debutante balls. Sadly, I can do no better; I came here to learn more about them! I'll add the "expert" tag and hope that someone at this project can give it some love. Balkan dance article?

I don't know if this is the proper forum to raise this question, but I was wondering whether an article on Balkan dance would fit into the structure of dance articles. Although there are articles on the folk dances of the individual Balkan countries, there is none on them as a group. Yet Balkan folk dance is often viewed as a single category within the dance community, because of a regional distinctiveness, and because, due to extensive ethnic mixing, dance styles don't break down along national but along ethnic lines - the same styles and dances are done in different countries. "Balkan line dance" forms a popular subcategory within the international folk dance movement, and folk dance groups all over the world specialize in the dances of the Balkan countries as a group. Balkan dances have much in common: they are line dances; the music has distinctive "asymmetric meters", composed of two different length beats; common formations, common handholds; a common vocabulary of foot movements, such as čukče, common styles. At present this extensive common dance "vocabulary" is described piecemeal in articles on the individual countries and individual dances, causing a great deal of redundancy. So how about an overview article to provide the terminology to describe these common styles? Should it be called Balkan line dance, Folk dances of the Balkans, or what? --ChetvornoTALK 23:02, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Mayerling Incident is tagged as part of WikiProject Dance and WikiProject Ballet.

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

Hi guys. Is there a dance infobox that would be suitable for a dance troupe, or performing arts group of some kind? Hi... I think this article is very interesting, because it talks about the most beautiful dance in the world. Ballet´s history had past for a lot of periods and changes around the world. All that changes have created three ballet styles: classical, neoclassical and contemporary. It´s considerate an art esenical. If you want to dance ballet you need to have a body control, because the movements are base in flexibility. Peruvian Vals

Hi. Wikipedia has articles for "Vals Peruano" in several languages. I am going to talk about the one in English. It is known that about the origin of this dance that it comes from colonial time, from the Viena Waltzes. Recently I was listening some pieces of French Valse Musette. You can listen the sound is alike Peruvian vals with the 1-2 that goes with the main melody. In Youtube is possible to see some older French people (see "vals musette" and "bal musette") that dance exactly like Peruvians dance it. In addition, need is to say that this music was rooted mainly in Lima and the larger cities in Perú. It is also called "Vals criollo" meaning that it was more related to persons with Spaniard heritage in their blood. The "Vals criollo/Peruano" was to benefit from radio and TV difussion last century. Its golden time was from te '40s to the '60s. Dance troupe

I noticed that there is no dance troupe article, dispite the fact that "(dance troupe)" is used for disambiguation in several article titles. I think dance troupe should be redirected to dance company and that article expanded. There will be exceptions to the rule, but generally the term dance troupe or dance company are pretty much interchangeable. Crazy-dancing (talk) 18:13, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
I also agree... Many dance troupes started off as small groups of dancers assembled for performances who lacked the scope, scale and finances of formal dance companies. Most major and notible dance organizations are today established as "companies" and the use of "troupe" appears to be archaic. Thanks.

Why not add a chapter in each dance article about description of the dance moves ? For example, for Salsa, descriptions of Enchufla or Copa or Cross body lead, etc could be added. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Category: Dance technique

I've started a discussion here about how to best serve readers seeking information about dance technique. I think readers would be best served if the dance technique category only lists articles that are focused on dance technique. In cases where there is no article about a specific dance technique, the category could list the article that contains the most comprehensive discussion of that technique. Others have suggested that the category cover organisations that are closely connected with specific techniques, but I feel that this would clutter the page and not be of value to readers who seek to expand their knowledge about technique. Presumably, that line of thinking could be expanded to the point where dance schools, dance companies, and dancers would also be listed on the category page. Comments? Lambtron I think you are failing to take into account what categories on Wikipedia are supposed to do. They are not there to present a neat little bundle of specific articles, they are there to help the reader find a whole range of articles associated with the subject that they are interested in. Sometimes this can indeed create very large, cluttered categories encompassing hundreds of articles, but here you are taking issue with the Category:Dance technique which has just 14 articles in it and 4 sub categories. This is hardly cluttered, if anything it is a badly under-utilised category.
Secondly, organisations that are notable for the research, development and training of dance technique are more than relevant to this category. And yes, the same should also apply to notable schools or individuals that have devised unique and identifiable training programmes or specific moves etc. Examples there might include Martha Graham, Vaganova, Matt Mattox, Leonard Reed and Victor Silvester. Companies I would never include in that category, because by their nature they exist for the performance of dance, not the training or development of technique, so no they would not be relevant to the category.
Finally, you make it sound as though this category were a rambling mess of unrelated articles, which is far from the truth. As you know, I have already written on the RAD talk page that I think you are applying too narrow a definition of what dance technique actually means. You are trying to create a discussion which has no definite answer, because not everyone sees the term "dance technique" and thinks of the same thing. Many people would think of ballet as being a dance technique, whereas others would think of it as a genre, category or style of dance, with the technique of ballet being more specific to the 'school' or method in which dancers are trained, in which case the RAD is one of the most prominent methods.
All in all, you are splitting hairs and creating an issue where there doesn't actually appear to be a problem. If you were raising this discussion about a category that was over cluttered with articles, I would agree. In this case however, you are discussing a category with a handful of articles that are all relevant, including the ones that you have removed from that category in recent days. Please don't take it personally -- I have great respect for your knowledge of dance and your contributions to Wikipedia, and I don't mean to be critical of the excellent work you have done. While it may seem like splitting hairs, and while it may not be a problem right now, I see this as an important policy matter that has the potential to "open the floodgate" and litter the category with largely unrelated articles, thereby rendering it useless for readers who are trying to research dance technique. Admittedly, "dance technique" is a gray area. In general, though, I believe most readers think of things like spotting, turnout, and pointed toes, or the rapid movement that is characteristic of the Balanchine method, and that's the sort of information they are seeking on the category page. Listing every technique-related organisation, even ones that "live, eat and breathe" a specific technique or method, will greatly diminish the usefulness of this category to readers. Listing one such organisation, and deciding it's okay to do so, opens the floodgate.
I disagree, the RAD is a 'special case' so to speak, hence why it is quoted in so many of the articles relating to ballet and ballet technique. No the article does not yet go into great detail about the unique aspects of the training system, but the notability of the method is well established nevertheless. Actually, the article goes into great detail about the RAD training system and its notability; what's missing is any substantial discussion of RAD dance technique. You said elsewhere that "[a] dancer trained in the RAD method of ballet will not learn to execute a pirouette using exactly the same technique as a dancer trained in the Vaganova method". I assume you were talking about differences in the way pirouettes are executed by dancers, and that's exactly the sort of technique I'm talking about: dance technique. Which is to say that I am pointedly not talking about teaching, or training technique or method. I keep hearing that RAD dance technique is notable, that it is rigorously codified, that it was invented by and is only taught by RAD, and so on, but I have not read a single sentence that explains what that proprietary dance technique is. For example, how do pirouettes differ between the RAD and Vaganova methods? One or two paragraphs about those differences would go a long way toward explaining RAD dance technique -- and satisfying the curiosity of readers who follow the dance technique category link in pursuit of that specific information. I agree that organisations that are notable for the research, development and training of dance technique are relevant to this category. Furthermore, I agree that the article for every such organisation belongs on the dance technique category page -- provided it actually discusses dance technique. I also believe that inventors of dance techniques, dance schools, dance companies, dancers, and dance styles and genres are relevant too, and they too should be subject to the same rules of inclusion on the category page. I don't think that's unreasonable, and everyone wins: appropriate articles of every flavor will be listed, and readers will be presented with meaty links that lead to knowledge of dance technique. WikiProject Disability templates on dance pages

A very deep side box from Wikipedia:WikiProject Disability has recently been repeatedly added to several dance company pages. The pages affected are dance companies with activities relevant to disabled people, so the articles are certainly relevant to that project, but the side box is in my view (by no means alone) far too obtrusive, pushing in some cases article content including pictures and the dance Navbox well below the end of the main article text. See Portal talk:Disability#Where the template does and doesn't_belong for the latest of many discussions about this.

I've removed the side boxes yet again from all three articles (AXIS Dance Company, Candoco and DV8 Physical Theatre) and added a new disability Navbox to DV8 Physical Theatre below the dance Navbox. I think that this is reasonable for these articles, but no time at present to add it to the other two. I will appreciate it if we can let the Navboxes stay on those three articles while we sort out the infrastructure in what is a rather young project. Comments, suggestions, updates welcome... I have been helping with their new portal and one or two other things.

The dance Navbox does not start expanded as I wished once there is another Navbox, even with the necessary parameter defined, so probably some change is needed there too. I will have a look at that over the next day or so. — Mirokado (talk) 08:49, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

I have just seen that another editor has added the Disability portal icon to AXIS and Candoco. Since there is already the Dance portal icon and no Navboxes on those two articles, this is quite reasonable. It jumps the gun a bit since the Disability portal has not yet been declared live, but it gives us the chance to see both possibilities. I will leave all three articles alone for now... Dance company lists of dancers etc: verifiability

I have recently had to revert what looks like a hoax update to The Royal Ballet (diff). It took forty minutes of searching before I decided to revert this. Verification took a long time because there are no inline references for the company member lists in the article and no reference was provided with the update. In future I will revert any company member updates I notice unless a reference already provided in the article clearly supports the change or a reference is provided with the update. I am not going to go on an immediate rampage through all the dance company articles but I have not yet found anything about "except for dance company articles" in the requirement for verifiability and I will not again waste so much of my time trying to verify an update. Champions of articles with company member lists should make sure the lists are verified and verifiable. A reference linking to the membership on the company website would in most cases be fine for verification (but if that is available I question the point of mirroring such a list on Wikipedia). Am wondering... the photo of the David H. Koch Theater shows continental seating... wouldn't that make this a photo of the NY State Theater as it became known as the Koch theater when Mr. Koch underwrote the renovating which added a pair of center aisles? While some of us prefer the continental seating plan of the old New York State Theater, and might want to preserve the memory of it, shouldn't we get a more accurate image of the David H. Suggested addition of archive film links to dance articles

There has been a recent dispute regarding the addition of links to Jacob's Pillow Dance Interactive in the external links section of articles, as posted by both myself Dammersk lrq2102. Links to this website were added to pages specific to the dancers, choreographer or musician as seen in the linked video. Dance Interactive is a new archival resource containing short clips of dance performance videos available at Jacob's Pillow in Becket, MA. The links were posted in an effort to share this rare, archival footage with the greater community and to sponsor a greater interest in dance overall. However, these links were removed by editors who claimed that they violated Wikipedia's policies concerning promotional material and use of the site as a "soapbox". With this added understanding of the links and their scholarly purpose, might these links be allowed? Or perhaps might they be added in a way that does not violate the above mentioned policies? Might it be better to post with the revised title concerning just the artist and date? Example: Alvin Ailey (Recorded 1988). Thank You, Dammersk (talk) 22:56, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia day at NYPLPA

As part of the Wikipedia Loves Libraries program, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts will be having a Wikipedia editathon on Saturday, Oct. 22, as part of New York City's Meetup group. Though the day is billed as Wikipedia:The Musical (i.e. with focus on musical theatre), that in no way excludes topics that would be well-covered by that library, including dance, theatre, opera, etc. Here's NYPL's blurb: Wikipedia: The Musical!

Article Check

So I copyed and pasted the Irish Stepdance article in my sandbox so I could add a new section, now I just need someone to look at it and tell me if I did the section wrong and/or change something having to do with the Irish Dance in Other Media section. It would certainly be nice to have at least some content with an inline reference in the article! Here are a few comments:
  • Please check the spelling and capitalise Irish
  • Section titles are with sentence capitalisation not title capitalisation, see MOS:CAP
  • No need for "other" in the title, just "Irish dance in the media" is probably OK
  • Some rephrasing needed so it is a bit clearer that both a documentary and a new series are meant, perhaps "... the competitive Irish dance world, for which the working title is Irish Dancing Tweens.(ref)"
  • Place inline references after any punctuation and before any space, see MOS:REFPUNC
  • It is better to complete references so they are not just a bare link. Have a look at other articles to see various ways of doing this
