Invalid NFUR--fails WP:NFCC #8: this does not "significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic" and its omission would not be detrimental to that understanding. This is not used educationally or critically but as decoration in the infobox. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 03:16, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep The nomination fails to discuss the specifics of this image. The still is a reasonable choice in this context though we might do better. Andrew D. (talk) 11:25, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Andrew Davidson: I don't understand what value is being added by this image in this article. The burden of proof is on the uploader and those who are arguing to keep: what does someone understand by seeing this that he didn't understand from the text of the article? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 07:18, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
      • No, burden of proof is on the nominator, who is the person wanting specific action to be taken. We still have no specific details about this image and what is supposedly wrong with it. Koavf says vaguely that he doesn't understand it. I understand it just fine. Andrew D. (talk) 08:57, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete as there is no reliably-sourced critical commentary on the image present in the article. Understanding of nothing in the article is significantly bettered by using this copyrighted work. — fourthords | =Λ= | 19:13, 25 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: In this case, I agree that the image can be deleted as decorative or trivial and as the uploader have requested this. --Leoboudv (talk) 09:04, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This can't fail NFCC as it is a PD Pre-1978 image and the FUR is perfectly valid for a PD photo. We hope (talk) 03:36, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - First of all, the NFCC do not apply as this image is listed as PD. The PD claim bears weight, as under US copyright law works published without a copyright notice before 1978 were released into the public domain; actually claiming copyright required a notice. We hope, I'd appreciate it if you uploaded the reverse as well (just on this page) so that we have proof on-Wiki that there was no notice.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 03:40, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep This is the Horta and without this creature, there would never have been any basis for the Devil in the Dark episode. the FUR is perfectly valid and is a notable or memorable scene that is believed to best help characterizes the episode where Captain Kirk confronts the Horta creature for the first time and survives. Have you seen the episode The Devil in the Dark where other Starfleet personnel are destroying this creature’s habitat thus forcing it to violently strike back and kill human beings. --Leoboudv (talk) 03:31, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Without a depiction of the Horta, no would know who this creature was--the first depiction of a foreign creature whose habitat and progeny is being destroyed by man. Star Trek was not a story about "the aliens are always bad". --Leoboudv (talk) 04:00, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep The uploader has now apparently left Wikipedia but he gave a very detailed WP:NFCC #8 reasoning here Its a legitimate argument to retain the image rather than to delete it. This single clip shows at least 2 alien species including Andorians and Tellarites. And you never see them in a future episode. This is the premise of the episode Babel which is a gathering of numerous aliens at one place. --Leoboudv (talk) 06:19, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep A picture of a tribble obviously increases reader understanding and the picture chosen seems quite good in this respect. The matter is quite significant educationally and critically, as explained at length in the article. The nomination does not address any specifics of this case, being a drive-by, cookie-cutter vague wave seemingly made without any due diligence. The usage therefore passes WP:NFCC. Andrew D. (talk) 12:12, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - tribbles are one of the best known and most iconic species in the fictional Star Trek universe. I believe that having a visual depiction of them, in the form of this particular image, is therefore of great utility in enhancing the reader's understanding of this television franchise. Midnightblueowl (talk) 20:06, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Tribbles are certainly one of the best known Star Trek space creatures and they are associated with the episode The Trouble with Tribbles. A single image of a tribble is inherently helpful to the reader here. --Leoboudv (talk) 05:39, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Invalid NFUR--fails WP:NFCC #8: this does not "significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic" and its omission would not be detrimental to that understanding. This is not used educationally or critically but as decoration in the infobox. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 04:36, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Meets WP:NFCC #8 since it depicts the Romulans' secret cloaking device which is the purpose of Kirk's espionage mission on the Romulan ship. It significantly increases a reader's understanding of the basis of the show. --Leoboudv (talk) 04:47, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Leoboudv: What would someone understand from seeing this that he wouldn't from the text of the article? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 07:21, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment They would understand that this device is a complex cylindrical cloaking device and that is significant for the article. Its the entire basis of the article. This is not just purely decorative. A series of sentences does not do justice without a simple image of this object because the viewer doesn't quite know what the device is in the first place...or that this object can change the entire balance of power between the Romulans and the Federation. That is why Kirk was authorized by the Federation to steal this device...something which this image caption shows him about to do. --Leoboudv (talk) 08:31, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: If it wasn't a complex device, there would be no reason for Kirk to steal the Romulan's device in the first place. The Federation would have created one for themselves. --Leoboudv (talk) 22:35, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. The reader does not have to know exactly what the device in question actually looked like. At present, this image is purely decorative. Midnightblueowl (talk) 20:00, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Images passes WP:NFCC #8 since it significantly "increase[s] [a] readers' understanding of the article topic"--the Tholian Web--by giving a visual identification of this object which is about to trap the Enterprise. The omission of this single image would be detrimental to a viewer's understanding of the premise of the episode Tholian Web--since the web is made of energy web--something which the caption clearly shows. This is also the title of this Star Trek episode. It also shows the Tholians weaving the web around the Enterprise ship. --Leoboudv (talk) 04:51, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Meets WP:NFCC #8 since it physically shows the transferrence of Kirk's consciousness to Janice Lester. It significantly increases a readers understanding of the article topic with a single image, and its omission would be detrimental to a viewer's understanding of the premise of the Turnabout Intruder episode. This is a clearcut case. --Leoboudv (talk) 04:44, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. I do not agree with Leoboudv's view that this image offers anything of significance to the reader. There is nothing depicted in the image that is not already conveyed in the text. This is not used educationally or critically but as decoration in the infobox. Note that it passed a review: Wikipedia:Non-free_content_review/Archive_72#File:STWhomGods_Destroy.jpg but I disagree--I do not think this enhances understanding enough to justify it, nor do most screenshots. I think that screenshots should only pass if the image itself is discussed--such as how a costume looked or a special effect was achieved. Choosing a screenshot from the middle of an episode is almost never actually educational, just adding some nice flair. What would someone not understand if this were deleted? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 04:45, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
