Article reference

Would using a simple Google search as a reference be sufficient for this claim? --Devourer09 05:04, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

You'd need to find an article about that. You couldn't use the Google search for it as the contents of a Google page changes periodically. Mr. R00t Talk 17:31, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Proper usage of quotes and ellipses

What would be the proper way to quote this statement?

  • The Adsense policy defines that "Sites displaying Google ads may not include" ... "advocacy against any individual, group, or organization",

or

  • The Adsense policy defines that "Sites displaying Google ads may not include ... advocacy against any individual, group, or organization",

I wish I understood the syntax for ellipses better. I've looked at some of the WP documentation but it didn't really explain it that well. Devourer09 14:21, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

The proper syntax would be "Sites displaying Google ads may not include [...] advocacy against any individual, group, or organization." If the quote continues after quoted portion it would end in an ellipse. Hope I answered your question. Mr. R00t Talk 17:24, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes you most certainly did. Thank you. --Devourer09 07:22, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi r00t

See the message on my talk page about my userpage issues, the first thing I want to ask is why don't my topicons display properly? Ғяіᴅaз'§Đøøм | Tea and biscuits? 11:31, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

I'll go check. I actually have time to help out now. Mr. R00t Talk 17:25, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, while the topicons are displaying alright on all skins it doesn't look all too good on Monobook or Vector. Is there a way to implement a script that would possibly combat this cross-wiki kerfuffle? Ғяіᴅaз'§Đøøм | Tea and biscuits? 01:51, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
I wish it were that easy. Apparently there is a way but it breaks the browser cache, which isn't a good thing. I've left some messages in different places and even filed a bugzilla. At bugzilla they said that it would have to entail javascript. Someone tried it and it caused more harm than good. I can make it look good in vector and monobook as those are the two most common but it will cause the rest to break probably. Mr. R00t Talk 01:54, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes please r00t. Ғяіᴅaз'§Đøøм | Tea and biscuits? 01:58, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
Hi r00t, was wondering if you could join the 2 vertical boxes to the other boxes, sort of like how the attribution and my collapse boxes are connected. Ғяіᴅaз'§Đøøм | Tea and biscuits? 04:04, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
With my attribution there's greenspace in-between the boxes. Ғяіᴆaз'§Đøøм | Champagne? 02:30, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm sorry. I don't know how to fix that. I'd suggest asking Mono or some other (talk page stalker) of HJ Mitchell. Sorry that I can't help. Mr. R00t Talk 17:55, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Helping out my students

I sure can use mentoring help! There is a list of students on my userpage plus some idea what we will be doing on WP:SUP Thanks!Thelmadatter (talk) 23:57, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

I see the thing at WP:SUP. It would really help if you emailed me a more detailed course description that I can print it and refer to it without checking that page. Also, I'd appreciate if you gave your students a little information on our autobiography policy next time your class meets and maybe give them an assignment to read our policies such as: WP:NOR, WP:POV, WP:BLP, WP:NOTABLE, WP:VANDAL (I don't expect that particular issue but it's a good thing to know about so they can deal with it if it comes up), WP:RELIABLE, WP:VERIFIABILITY, and WP:FU (our non-free content policy). I don't know if you've already done this but if not, please do. Just sort of have them treat it like assigned reading. I'll offer help to your students and act as a sort of mentor. If you wish I can send you an email to show to your students. Cheers, Mr. R00t Talk 01:59, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
I had them read the Five Pillars and write about them. Ill assign others readings as we go along as you know that WP rules and regs can be overwhelming. There is precious little in the way of a syllabus because my boss and co-teacher wants to remain flexible in how this course develops. I am in charge of teaching writing. My goals for the class in WP are twofold... one, for them to incorporate themselves at least somewhat into an English-language speaking environment, and getting interaction with people other than myself. Second is to write for an authentic audience, again someone other than myself. As for specific assignments, Im going to have to create and modify them as we go along, based on what I did a couple of years ago. Since this is a Business English class, they will eventually be writing on business-related topics, profiles of notable businesses, perhaps businesspeople (I will discourage this one because of BLP issues, but not forbid it) and other topics related to their majors such as marketing, international business, finance, accounting, etc. Many of these topics will relate to Mexico as well. They will do a final project at the end of the course, one option will be to write an article in WP. Right now, I have them briefly (7 to 10 sentences)expanding a municipality article. I prefer they work on one of the many 1-3 sentences articles that exist for Oaxaca because the articles have the bare frame and a link to a source for more information. In this way, students can add information without having to learn all the intricacies of citation and page format. We can work on that after they get how to modify pages.
You're right about the overwhelming bit. You might want to warn them about British English. Some articles are written entirely in it. It has slight variations from regular (US) English. A lot of editors are from England or Australia and contribute in British English. Cheers, Mr. R00t Talk 23:43, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

adoption

  • I'm not sure, but I believe you're supposed to ask people if they would like for you to adopt them, rather than just informing them that you have unilaterally decided to make them your adoptee. At the very least, it seems more polite. • Ling.Nut 02:24, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
I think I offered my help. If not than I can edit my posts to make it sound more like it. I guess some of it does sound like "I am mentoring you. You have no choice mwahahahaha!" I'll go around and change it a bit. Mr. R00t Talk 23:40, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Double quotation marks and Reliable sources

With regard to double quotation marks, should the quotation marks in this sentence be removed and the quoted term be italicized per WP:MOS:

...forums and groups, as well as over a hundred local clubs, known as "lairs".

I see many terms quoted like this in lots of articles and I'm wondering if it could be used as a NPOV weasel technique or should the quotes just be changed and the terms italicized because they are being referred to words as words.

And my second question is could you give me some tips of finding or identifying reliable sources for articles? I've read some of the policies but could you like give it to me in a nutshell? I'd like to make articles more verifiable because I think this is the most common issue I see with stub or start-class articles. Thanks. --Devourer09 18:50, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Usually "these" are used when writing by hand to portray italicized text. It could be changed to being italic but it isn't a huge issue, I'd usually say discuss with users on the talk page. With reliable sourcing it's a little more difficult. You need stuff from people not connected to the person/place/thing you are writing about. That means that you should have large newspapers, books, or well known websites. Wikipedia is not a reliable source. :) Sorry for the late response. School just started and I've been crushed with things that need doing. I usually come home every day at four and sleep until dinner. I'm going to be available mostly on weekends or Fridays since I'm less likely to have homework. I'll try to respond promptly but I'm going to be busy. Mr. R00t Talk 17:38, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
