Jo Sung-woo (Hangul: 조성우; born December 18, 1989),[1] better known by his stage name Code Kunst (Hangul: 코드 쿤스트), is a South Korean composer and music producer. He joined the record label HIGHGRND in September 2015,[2] and released his third studio album Muggle's Mansion on February 28, 2017.[3] In June 2018, he moved to the record label AOMG.[4] In July 2018, it was confirmed he would be appearing as a judge alongside Paloalto on the reality survival show, Show Me the Money 777.[5]

Life and career[edit]

The word "Kunst" means "Art" in German, therefore the stage name Code Kunst has a meaning of "the music I produced will become arts."[6] Code Kunst started his music career relevantly later in his life, after serving in the military. He adds a lot of vocal chopping in his music which became one of his unique music styles.[6]

Code Kunst grew up looking at drawings drew by his mother, and that helped him visualize music.[7] As a music producer, Code Kunst believes that after listening to a song he should be able to envision images in his head and be inspired with new imaginations for his own creativity. This is an essential component for his music producing process.[8] September, 2015, Code Kunst joined the label HIGHGRND under YG Entertainment due to the impact of Tablo, and released his third album Muggle's Mansion in February, 2017. He left HIGHGRND and joined AOMG in June, 2018. He is also a member of Legit Goons crew, which consists of composers, rappers, engineers, and filmmakers.

Rapper Mac Miller and his music played an important role in Code Kunst's music producing career. Code Kunst claims that Mac Miller was the inspiration to one-third of his music.[8] Code Kunst admires Mac Miller's ability to harmonize with the producers' work and once expressed the wishes to collaborate Mac Miller. Mac Miller passed away on September 7, 2018,[9] the news was devastated to Code Kunst.[8][6]

Working together for a very long time, Code Kunst is very close with members from the VisMajor Company founded by Deepflow, including Nucksal and Dunmills. He also developed deep relationship with members in AOMG. He said in the program Running Man that Woo Won-jae is a very close friend of him in AOMG.

Survival Shows[edit]

In 2018, Code Kunst collaborated with various Korean hip-hop artists including Nafla, Loopy, Kid Milli, etc. In September 2018, Code Kunst officially appeared in the Korean Hip-Hop survival show Show Me the Money 777 as one of the judges. He then was nominated by Korean Hip-Hop Awards for Best Producer in 2019.[10] Code Kunst believes that remaining innocent is very important for a musician. He tries to remain young mentally, and his enjoyable personality can often be seen from his appearance on reality shows.

Loopy and Kid Milli from his team won second and third place in Show Me the Money 777. The song Good Day that was a huge achievement, making first place on various music sites in Korea including Melon, Genie Music, Mnet, and various other Korean music platforms.

In 2019, Code Kunst, along with Jay Park, Simon Dominic, Woo Won-jae, and Gray, appeared as judges on the audition program Signhere started by Korean Hip-hop label AOMG and MBN.[11]

Same year in 2019, Code Kunst appeared in another Hip-hop reality survival program High School Rapper 3[12]. Code Kunst was in the same team with The Quiett. Together they produced Go High (feat, Changmo, Woo Won-jae) sang by female rapper Lee Young-ji, who came as the final winner to the show.

Trivia[edit]

  • He mentioned in Radio Star that when he just began composing music, he used to get bleeding nose because he stayed up for too many nights making music. He enjoyed it because he thought that was what 'real artists' do. He thinks he had 중이병 (a narcissistic allusion that 8th-grade-age teens have) back then.[6]
  • He also joked in High School Rapper 3 that he has an IQ of 163.
  • He loves cats and has two cats named Seeroo and Panda, they are often seen in his instagram posts and live videos.
  • When asked about his ideal type of girls, he picked Kim Min-hee and Sunmi because he thinks they have a natural eastern beauty.[13]

Albums and Collaborations[edit]

Code Kunst released his first album Novel in April, 2014.[14] He then collaborated with Tablo and Joey Badass in September, 2015, before he joined the music label HIGHGRND. The soundtrack's name is Hood.[15] When it comes to collaborations, Code Kunst thinks the most important factor is to have fun working together. He had great time working with Tablo and Joey Badass and claimed that Tablo, Joey Badass, and C Jamm are some of the artists most fun to work with.[13]

He said in the interview in 2019 that he is now preparing his collaboration with Woo Won-jae.[16]

Muggle's Mansion[edit]

Code Kunst's album Muggle's Mansion was released in 2017, February 28th. It is Code Kunst's third album. In this album, he collaborated with a variety of Korean artists such as Lee Hi, Mino (rapper), Hyukoh, Tablo, Dok2, Loco (rapper), Bewhy, Nucksal, Loopy, etc. The word "Muggle" has two meanings, one meaning can be traced to Harry Potter in which "muggles" are a group of ordinary people without magic. On the other hand, Code Kunst believes ordinary people can also have unusual stories and sounds. Getting together to make music un-ordinary music is the ambition and concept for this album.[17] Muggle's Mansion was nominated by the Korean Hip-Hop Awards for Album of the Year.[18]
