Critical Reflection: Media and Participation 2018-2019 Project[edit]

Prior to writing this critical reflection about my Wikipedia project, I have created a Wikipedia page on South Korean artist Rose Park Chaeyoung. I have always paid attention to this Korean artist as she is a part of a South Korean girl group named Blackpink. I always have thought a famous artist that has attention from Asia to Europe and the United States must have a Wikipedia page, but as I searched on it, she does not have one. However, before I have decided on making a Wikipedia entry for Rose Park, I have considered the list of names MoDA had provided to us.

On the list, my first choice was an artist named Arthur Gwatkin, however, I could not find any information about this artist on the internet, as well as in the Middlesex University library, therefore, I moved on to my second choice. My second choice was Laurence Scarfe, a Modern British artist, I have done research on him, in addition, I even started writing my entry on him. Unfortunately, I did not check carefully, and in the end found out that our senior, Miriam had already started writing an entry on him, as a result, I had given up and moved on to my third choice, which is Rose Park Chaeyoung.

Rose Park is a well-known South Korean artist and most of the information are found on various fandom websites. I have found that those fandom websites operate similarly to Wikipedia, many different “fans” can add information to those artists, however, what different is, they may have to message the admin to add information, but Wikipedians can just edit by themselves. Fandoms all wants to contribute to these sites which attract the artists’ attention, in addition, fans from all over the world could connect to other fans through these platforms. According to Jenkins, Ford, and Green (2010), these fandom platforms allow fans and artists to connect and emerge quickly and easily. These fandom sites allow fans to connect through their common interests and find connectivity through online platforms and social medias.

As I was writing for Rose Park, I found out a lot of information on her, however, they are all from fandom websites instead of an official website. This made me doubt the reliability of these information, since I was told to never use Wikipedia information while writing. One example was, Rose was born in Auckland, Australia, and raised in Melbourne, Australia, and later moved to South Korea. As I search for her nationality, many says New Zealander, others say Australian, and some other say South Korean because her parents are South Korean. According to Jemielniak and Aibar (2016), people who write on Wikipedia are amateurs who could not deliver high standard writings, and insists that Wikipedia will not survive because of its open standards. This shows that Wikipedia is not considered as a reliable and trustworthy source, since not everyone who writes on it has the responsibility of delivering accurate information.
