Sandara Park (Korean: 박산다라; born November 12, 1984[1]), also known by her stage name Dara (Korean: 다라), is a South Korean singer, dancer, actress, television personality, model, and host. Seen as the most influential Korean star in the Philippines due to the success of her multifaceted career, she was given the honorific national title "Pambansang krungkrung ng Pilipinas", and was nicknamed the "BoA of the Philippines" by Korean fans. She is recognized as a fashion and beauty icon because of her eccentric and distinct fashion style. Park is also acknowledged for acting as a bridge between Filipino and South Korean culture, and was given a plaque of appreciation by the Korea Tourism Organization for her contributions. Aspects of Park's personal life, including her relationships, family issues, and the fallout with Hero Angeles while still in the Philippines, attracted national attention as well.

Rising to fame in the early-2000's, Park became an overnight superstar while participating as a contestant during the first season of Star Circle Quest in 2004, in which she finished as the runner-up. She signed with Star Magic after the completion of the competition and officially began her music career with the self-titled extended play, Sandara, which debuted atop the Philippine charts and has sold over 100,000 physical copies. It remains the only album by a Korean born act to be certified platinum by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry. The carrier single, "In Or Out", was a major dance anthem and became a nationwide hit, cementing her status as an 'imported' household name in the region. The album's later repackaging featured a new single, Walang Sabit, which became very popular as well. 2004 also saw her first lead acting role in the movie Bcuz of U, which won her the Best New Actress award at the PMPC Star Awards for Movies. Park continued to dominate the Philippines market through 2005 with the major success of her comedy film Can This Be Love, and the single Ang Ganda Ko.

After suffering a stall in her career, Park returned to South Korea quietly in 2007 and signed with entertainment company, YG Entertainment. In 2009, she debuted as a member of 2NE1, the company's first girl group. The quartet is now one of the most successful girl groups in South Korea, and have enjoyed critical and commercial success in both music and image, the likes of which has led them to be globally acknowledged. Park's first single release in South Korea, "Kiss" (2009), showcased a more mature sound that sharply deviated from her earlier music. 2NE1's hiatus in late 2014 allowed Park to refocus on her solo career and in 2015, subsequently headlined the web-dramas Dr. Ian, We Broke Up, and Missing Korea. She won the "Best Actress" award at the K-web festival for her portrayal as Lee So Dam in Dr. Ian, and We Broke Up became one of the highest viewed web-dramas of the year. Park was a fixed host on the highly-rated variety program Sugar Man (2015-2016), and now currently appears as a judge on Pinoy Boyband Superstar (2016).

Sandara Park was born on November 12, 1984, in Busan, South Korea. Her unusual and rare three-syllable name stems from the childhood nickname of revolutionary war hero General Kim Yusin. He was a cousin to Queen Seondeok of Silla and is considered a national figurehead of Korean culture for having led the unification of the Korean peninsula. Her name means "Wise and Intelligent". She is the daughter of Ik-Su Park, a trading businessman, and Kyung Ran-Kim.[2] She has two siblings; a younger sister named Durami,[3] and a brother named Sang-hyun who later became a member of MBLAQ (2009-2014), and is currently active as an actor and model.[4]

At an early age, Park became interested in singing. Her favorite toy as a baby was a cassette player with a microphone attached to it.. However, those aspirations were halted when her father, who had been running a very successful business in trading, suffered a strain incurred by relatives who got involved in bad deals. The business quickly went bankrupt and the family was sent into financial ruin. They then moved to Daegu to be closer to Park's grandmother and for the cheaper living spaces. Despite efforts to revitalize his business, Park's father was unable to make ends meet, and he was eventually forced to leave his family in 1992 for the Philippines in hopes of rebuilding his career. Without her father's added support, Park often had to walk 5 miles to her grandmother's house to beg for milk money. Their living situation deteriorated to the point in which they sometimes couldn't afford meager provisions such as bread and for months lived only on eggs and milk; things like Soda and ice cream were considered a "treat". Park took responsibility of her younger siblings in the place of her mother so she could work longer hours. Eventually, her father was able to stabilize his career, and in 1995, moved the family to Alabang, Muntinlupa City, Philippines to begin a new life.[5][6]

The transition was very difficult on Park due to language and cultural barriers, and at one point, ceased talking as she was unable to communicate properly, leading her classmates to believe that she was mute. Her unhappiness grew to the point where her parents promised that after graduating high school, she could return to South Korea to live with relatives. Initially, no one in their family was fluent in . However, she learned English and studied Chinese when she began school in the Philippines, and later became quite fluent in Filipino.

Career[edit]

2003-2005: Television breakthrough and national stardom[edit]

In 2003, during one of her school activities, she met Pauleen Luna, a former talent of ABS-CBN Corporation Channel 2's Talent Center who encouraged Park to take part in the November auditions for Star Circle Quest, a reality-based talent search television program.[8] Over the course of the season, she escaped elimination several times, and reached the final ten contestants.[8] Her Korean ethnicity resulted in some trouble with the daily exercises set by the panel of Filipino judges. During the last elimination round (in which only five people advanced), Park broke a record by receiving approximately half a million text votes. She eventually finished in second place behind Hero Angeles.[9]

Following her success in the show, Park entered the film business in 2004, when she made a cameo appearance in the comedy film Volta as herself. She then was given her own afternoon spot "Sandara's Romance", a daily show featuring Korean dramas and commentary. Park was the only contestant to have her own show. She became the mainstay host for ASAP Fanatic, a Sunday noontime teen variety show and starred in SCQ Reload all in quick succession. She then made her official acting debut as part of an ensemble cast in the movie Bcuz of U (2004), a three-story film.[10][11] She acted alongside Hero Angeles, Kristine Hermosa and Heart Evangelista. The film grossed ₱86,000,000 in ticket sales. Park's role won her the "Best New Actress" award at the 19th PMPC Star Awards for Television.[12] Park then received her first leading role in the film Can This Be Love as Daisy, a Korean immigrant studying in the Philippines. The film reunited her with Angeles and fellow Star Circle Quest contestants Roxanne Guinoo and Joross Gamboa. Can This Be Love premiered on April 27, 2005 and reportedly grossed almost 100 million pesos.[12][13] Park was also nominated for her role at the 2006 Golden Screen Awards.[14] One was Krystala, a fantasy series with Judy Ann Santos.[15] and television specials My Name is Sandara Park (2004) and SCQ Reload: OK Ako! (2004).

On January 1, 2004, Park launched her self-titled debut extended play, with the lead promotional single, "In or Out", a song that parodied her experiences on Star Circle Quest. The single was an instant success described as a "novelty" dance hit.[16][17][18]

In December 2004, YG Entertainment's Yang Hyun Suk offered Park workshop classes in South Korea after seeing the KBS Documentary My Name Is Sandara Park.[19] In March 2005, Park went ahead with the workshops, putting her career in the Philippines on hold. After six months, she resumed work in the Philippines, starring in several movies. She left the Philippines show business industry permanently and returned to South Korea with her family on August 1, 2007.[20] YG Entertainment announced the following day that Park had signed a contract with them.[21]

Sandara left the Philippines and returned to South Korea on August 1, 2007 with her mother and siblings to begin a new life. The next day, August 2, 2007, YG Entertainment reported that they had signed a contract with Sandara.

She sung the theme song "We Are The Stars" for the worldwide hit computer game turned animation Ragnarok the Animation.

2006-8: Return home and reemergence[edit]

Her third movie in the country was D' Lucky Ones (2006), wherein she was paired with co-SCQ alumnus and then real-life boyfriend, Joseph Bitangcol due to Angeles' decision to retire from show business.[12][23] In the same year, her fourth and last movie Super Noypi was shown in Christmas 2006 and was an official entry into the 32nd Metro Manila Film Festival.[24] She also acted in various series Crazy For You (2006) and Abt Ur Luv (2006)

Before her debut, she was cast in a minor role for the TV drama, The Return of Iljimae as Rie in 2008.[25][26] Later, she appeared as the love interest of label mate T.O.P, one of the members of Big Bang, in Gummy's music video for "I'm Sorry".[27] Upon discovering that there was a girl-group in the works at YG Entertainment, Park asked to join but was rejected for image not suiting the group. Determined to train for a spot, she sent Yang Hyun-Suk a video of herself preforming to a Jennifer Lopez song. After viewing the tape, she was allowed to practice with the other trainees.

2009-13: 2NE1, revival of career, and solo single[edit]

Park took on the stage name "Dara" and was officially placed in "21", being joined by Bom, CL and Minzy. just before collaborating with label-mates Big Bang for the song "Lollipop". Having been addressed as the "Female Bigbang", the group's name was announced as "21"; however, due to the discovery of a singer with the same name, the group was quickly renamed "2NE1".[28] The group then collaborated with , before officially debuting on SBS's The Music Trend on May 17, 2009 where they performed "Fire".[29] Their first EP spawned the number-one single "I Don't Care", which won them the "Song of the Year" award at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards, making them the first rookie group to win a daesung the same year of debut (2 wins). 2NE1. Park was featured on G-Dragon's solo album Heartbreaker, with their song entitled "Hello". They performed together a couple of times on music events, shows, and also during G-Dragon's two-day solo concert entitled Shine A Light in December 2009.

On July 9, 2009, Park released her first official song in South Korea, featuring fellow member CL as a rapper. She was the first member of 2NE1 who would do so in order to promote their next album. Entitled "Kiss" (Korean: 입맞춤), the song reunited Park with Teddy, who helped 2NE1 with their first mini-album and its leading single. The song, as explained by the lyrics, describes a woman who wants her lover to kiss her but is turned off by his attitude. Upon its release, it debuted high on various music charts, and managed to remove G-dragon's "Heartbreaker" from its top spot on Bugs in particular. The single was featured in Park's first commercial for Oriental Brewery's Cass Beer series alongside K-Drama actor Lee Min Ho. As it was a CF song, she was not able to promote it traditionally on tv, but the song would later make an appearance during 2NE1's concert set-list.


2NE1 returned with their first full-length album To Anyone in 2010 by promoting simultaneously the three title tracks from the album, "Clap Your Hands", "Go Away" and "Can't Nobody" after releasing the surprise single "Follow Me"[30] that took number one for the week of February 13.[31] The single was used as a theme song for Samsung Corby Folder.[32] The album garnered huge success and 2NE1 won an overall 11 times on various music shows from their promotions.[33] When combined, the downloads from the album made them the best-selling digital girl-group that year.[34] 2NE1 continued their winning streak at the year-end awards, walking away with many top prizes, most notably the "Artist of the Year" and "Album of the Year" awards at the MAMA's, where they won 4 awards out of the 6 they were nominated for.

In July 2010, Park was featured as the female lead in Taeyang's "I Need A Girl" music video.[35] A dance and movie version were made for the music video.[36]

Their second EP was met with similar success for the year of 2011, where all songs but 2 charted at number-one. The single 'I Am the Best' won them their second "Artist of the Year" award and was used later as the background music for Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 tablet laptop commercial in 2014.[37]\[38][37] T Due to its continued popularity, the song was re-released as a single in that year and debuted at #1 on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart, making them the first and only girl-group to do so and the second Korean act to chart that high after PSY.[39] In 2012-2013, 2NE1 released only singles, which produced the number-one hits "I Love You" (2012), "Falling in Love" and "Missing You" (2013). Both "I Love You" and "Missing You" won the "Digital Bonsang" award at the Golden Disk Awards, which is otherwise known to be the equivalent of Song of the Year.

On June 27, 2012, Park's Philippine Movies were shown in Korea. The films Bcuz of U, The Lucky Ones, and Can This Be Love were shown on the said date on Korea's Home Choice and SK Broadband.[40]

Due to frequent updates on 2NE1's activities and her close relationship with the public, fans dubbed her as the groups PR manager and was consequently promoted to Communications Director on April 18, 2011. In order to make her promotion official, YG Entertainment gave Park her own Certificate of Appointment.[41]

2014–2015: Return to acting and Sugar Man[edit]

In 2014, they released their second full-length album Crush which spawned the number-one single "Come Back Home" and the top 5 hit "Gotta Be You". The singles swept real time charts[42] and was the most downloaded album for that year,[43] ultimately winning them the "Singer of the Year" award at the Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards for the month of (March). They embarked on their second world tour List of 2NE1 concert tours to promote their album, but upon it's end the group went on hiatus due to a member's past legal issue that resurfaced through the media.[44] They were also honored by Youtube for the album's lead single, and were the only Korean acts featured on the list alongside Big Bang.[45] Park made a surprise cameo appearance as a top actress in the last episode of the highly rated Korean drama My Love from the Star.[46] In May of 2014, ABS-CBN announced that Park would be guesting on Pinoy Big Brother, which simultaneously set off a media frenzy where the news of her return dominated both the Philippines and worldwide Twitter trending topics.[47] Her arrival was also one of the trending terms on twitter, which welcomed her "home".[48] On the 15, she guested on the reality show Pinoy Big Brother: Uber (2007-2014) and the telecast All In Über as a celebrity houseguest during its live episode. She appeared on Gandang Gabi, Vice! as well, one of the most popular talk shows in the Philippines hosted by Vice Ganda. Park also shortly replaced close friend Yoo In-na as a DJ for her Let's Crank Up the Volume radio program from May to June due to scheduling clashes.[49] On November 12, BeFunny Studios made an unannounced release of a 3-part mini web series starring The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun and Park titled "What's eating Steven Yeun".[50] Sandara played the role of Steven Yeun's American girlfriend who is left behind as her boyfriend pursues a career in "Mokbang", which is a popular Korean internet broadcast where generally attractive people eat in front of a webcam and get paid for it. The comedy sketch went viral and reached over a million views in the few days after release.[51]

In 2015, seven years after her last acting role, Park returned to the small screen through the web-drama Dr. Ian (Korean: 닥터이안), starring alongside rising star Kim Young-kwang.[52] Expectations were high as the series featured Park playing in her first leading role since moving back to South Korea,[53] and coupled with the involvement of director Kwon Hyeok-chan, who rose to prominence after helming Secret Garden, A Gentleman's Dignity, and Master's Sun,[54] the drama was highly anticipated as well. The series was globally popular, catching on in regions such as the United States, Taiwan, and Thailand.[55] Since its release, the drama has amassed views of nearly 2 million. The drama earned both lead actors praise for the roles, which resulted in Park winning a “Best Actress” award, her first in South Korea, and Kim a nomination for "Best Actor" at the K-web festival, the only Asian awards show geared solely towards internet bases dramas. She was the first recipient of the honor.[56] Upon the return of Korean hip hop pioneer group Jinusean, Park joined them on You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook to perform their very first hit "Tell Me", the single that propelled them to stardom.[57] Her natural performance impressed the group and led them to immediately ask her to perform their latest song "Tell Me One More Time' on their comeback stage in place of the original singer, Jang Hana. The collaboration aired on KBS2's Music Bank May 1.[58]

Park continued her acting venture by taking her second leading role of the year in We Broke Up (Korean: 우리헤어졌어요), a web-drama based upon a web-toon of the same name.[59] She played the role of Noh Woori, a character described as an optimistic and bright female preparing to get a job. Premiering in June, the series was a runaway success in and out of the country,[60][61] becoming the 4th most watched series on Naver by attracting more than 11 million views on the platform.[62] It garnered more than 16 million views in total from various official platforms it was aired on. The series was also invited to be screened at the 21st Geneva International Film Festival Tous Ecrans, making it the first web-based Korean drama to do so since the genre's meteoric rise in popularity.[63] Due to the popularity of the web-drama, fans were invited to a special mini-concert held on August 17 at Rolling Hall in the Hongdae area in Seoul to more closely communicate with them. There, they had talk session and performed original songs from the web-drama's soundtrack.[61] In the midst of the drama's airing, Park made cameo appearances as herself in the episodes 4-5, and 12 of the hit television series The Producers, playing a fictional 2 Days & 1 Night variety program cast member along with her ‘We Broke Up’ co-star Kang Seung-yoon.[64][65] Her performance as a fictionalized, snooty version of herself was praised and drew positive responses from viewers.

Park's third acting role saw her cast opposite Goong star Kim Jeong Hoon in "Missing Korea", a romantic-comedy set in the fictional year of 2020, in which the North and South are working towards unification through non-governmental exchanges and economic cooperation, leading to the first-ever ′North-South Joint Miss Korea Pageant.′[66] Though not as successful on the global market as her previous web-drama's, the series fared better domestically. Park's performance in the comedy earned her another nomination for "Best Actress" in the upcoming 2016 K-web festival, making her the first idol-turned-actress to be nominated for the award in succeeding years.[67] The drama is also nominated in 4 other categories, such as: Best Actor, Best Music, Best Director, and Best Web Series of all Genres.[67] Park later joined the hit JTBC variety show Sugar Man alongside Yoo Jae-suk, You Hee-yeol, and Kim Eana as a co-host.[68] The show aims to seek out once-popular singers, recreate their songs, and make it a hit once more in the present day. The first episode was officially broadcast on October 20.[69] The production team stated, "We think that Sandara Park has a unique strength that encompasses the emotions of the younger generation and the memories of the older generation. We predict she will actively radiate new, never-before-seen charms."[69] Park's close ties with YG Entertainment working as their public relations director led to her being directly involved with the talent appearing on the show.[70] Through her involvement, artists such as Akmu, Winner, iKON, and Lee Hi were able to perform on the show, and during an episode for which she wasn't present, friend and fellow actress Yoo In-na replaced her.[70]

The group's only activity in 2015 was a surprise performance at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong. After CL's performance of her solo singles "The Baddest Female" and the newly released "HELLO BI+CHES", all members reunited to perform their hit songs "Fire" and "I Am the Best".[71][72][73] The performance is now the most-viewed MAMA performance by a girl-group. The surprise MAMA appearance was applauded and as a result, was listed as one of the best performances of 2015 by Fuse.[74]

2016: One Step and judging debut[edit]

Park started the year 2016 with a special appearance in the MBC drama One More Happy Ending (Korean: 한번 더 해피엔딩).[75] Park played the role of Goo Seul-Ah, the most popular and beloved member of a first-generation girl group called Angels.[76] Her character was described as an egotistical bully and as a result of her selfishness and constant belittling, the group disbands, but bolstered by her popularity, she becomes a superstar actress while the rest disappear out of the public eye.[77][78][79] Park next big project will be a Korean film remake of Begin Again entitled One Step.[80] She will play a convenience store part-timer who seeks out a mysterious melody she hears every night in her dreams, and meets the producer of an Internet broadcasting program who tries to help her find out the music.[81][66] Actor Han Jae-suk is slated to play alongside her as the producer, and the well known music producer Kim Soo-Jin was brought in to help with the soundtrack. Popular webtoonist Mitty (Hong Seung Pyo) also signed on to help write the scenario. The film is set to be released in September of 2016.[82] Park was officially promoted as YG Entertainment's public relations director.[83] On April 5, 2016, YG Entertainment confirmed that the youngest, Minzy, was officially leaving the group. 2NE1's contract expired on May 5, and Minzy was the only member who did not resign.[84][85][86]In June, it was announced that Park would be judging the Pinoy Boyband Superstar reality competition show alongside Yeng Constantino and Vice Ganda.[87]
