VIXX (Korean: 빅스; acronym for Voice, Visual, Value in Excelsis) is a six-member South Korean boy band, signed under Jellyfish Entertainment. The name, VIXX, was also chosen by viewer votes.[1] VIXX consists of N, Leo, Ken, Ravi, Hongbin, and Hyuk. They are predominantly known as a concept or performance group whose music, lyrics, choreography, and overall stage performances are crafted together to tell a story or concept.[2]


N[edit]

Cha Hakyeon (Korean: 차학연), professionally known as N (Korean: 엔), is a South Korean singer, choreographer, actor, MC, and radio host currently currently signed under Jellyfish Entertainment. He is the leader of boy group VIXX. He is also MC of Show! Music Core and hosts his own radio show. He was born on (1990-06-30) June 30, 1990 (age 33) in Changwon, the capital city of Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. He attended Howon University alongside fellow VIXX member, Leo.[3]

Pre-debut[edit]

N had an extensive dance background specializing in ballet, jazz and contemporary. Prior to his debut, he has won many dance competitions. In 2009, he participated and won various contests held by big entertainment agencies such as SM, YG, and JYP.[4] His blindfold dance, personally choreographed by him, won the Grand Prize at the Korean Youth Dance Festival.[5] He received many casting offers from various companies but decided to train with Jellyfish Entertainment.

N was featured in Brian Joo's Let This Die and Seo In-guk's Shake It Up music videos alongside other VIXX members. He has also participated in the musical Gwanghwamun Sonata alongside Infinite's Woohyun in 2012.[6]

Debut (2012–present)[edit]

N debuted as a member of VIXX on May 24, 2012. On December 2012, he became a cast member of The Romantic & Idol Season 2.[7] N appeared as a regular guest in KBS Cool FM's radio show, Kiss The Radio,[8] every Thursday from 2013 to 2014 along with Super Junior's Ryeowook, OKDAL and BTOB's Eunkwang. That year, he went on to choreographed VIXX's singles G.R.8.U and "Light Up the Darkness".[9] He also choreographed VIXX's "Lovestoned" performances for the show Dancing 9.[10]

On May 2014, N made his acting debut in the popular MBC drama Hotel King as Noah, a bright and lively hotel employee.[11][12] He starred in the SBS drama, Family Outing, as detective Cha Hakyeon.[13]

On June 10, 2014, N was documented in 4 Things Show where he shared his passion and ambitions as an artist.[14] He also starred in TvN's First Day Of Work Season 3 as a cast member.[15] He alongside fellow VIXX member, Hyuk, BTOB member Sungjae and Got7 member Jackson, joined a collaboration project group by MBC Every 1's variety show, Hitmaker, under the name Big Byung.[16] Under the stage name Dol Baeki, he and the group released two music videos, "Stress Come On" and "Ojingeo Doengeo".[17] [18] N appeared as a part of the "Idol Special" episode of Running Man with Super Junior's Ryeowook, Infinite's Dongwoo, BTOB's Minhyuk, Teen Top's Niel, and Girl's Day's Sojin.[19] He was also a cast member of MBC Every1's "Bachelor Party".[20][21] On April 25, 2015, N was one of the main MC alongside Shinee's Minho and Red Velvet's Yeri for Show! Music Core. On May 2, 2015, "VIXX N K-pop" premiered on the radio with N as the host and fellow member Ken as a fixed guest for the Quiz King segment.

Leo[edit]

Jung Taekwoon (Korean: 정택운; born November 10, 1990), commonly known by his stage name Leo, is a South Korean singer, actor, and producer. He is a main vocalist of the boy band VIXX under Jellyfish Entertainment known for his high-pitched vocals.[22] Leo has also expressed an interest in composing and has composed "In the Cold" off their Boy's Record album. He also performed another self-produced song in their Utopia concert.

Jung was born in Yangjae-dong, Seoul, South Korea. He lived with his mother and father, as well as his three older sisters. Growing up, Jung was an athletic boy, excelling in swimming, boxing, taekwondo, and football.[23] He was on the National Youth Soccer Team. While recovering from an injury, he developed an interest in singing after listening to Wheesung's "Walking in the Sky".[24] He passed his audition to Jellyfish Entertainment on his vocal talent. [25] Before his debut, he was a back up dancer for 2pm and in Brian Joo's music video "Let this Die" and Seo In Guk's "Shake it Up".

An avid sports fan, Leo has appeared in several athletic shows with other idols such as Dream Team and Idol Athletics Championship.[26][27] He even appeared a special episode of Running Man where he was a member of a soccer team.[28] In April 11, 2014, Leo landed the lead role for the music Full House as Lee Young Jae.[29] He later released a duet with singer Lyn with her self-composed ballad "Blossom Tears". [30] In the haunting music video, he played a psychopath who killed the women he loved so that he could keep them.[31] Leo himself released his own self-composed ballad "In the Cold Night". Originally written as a duet for between him and Ken, a studio version was released with the rest of the members performing.[31] The track was released for in their album Boy's Record.

Ken[edit]

Ken (Korean: 박찬열; Hanja: 朴灿烈), born Park Chanyeol on (1992-11-27) November 27, 1992 (age 31)[32] in Seoul, South Korea, is one of the main rappers of EXO and the main rapper of its sub-group EXO-K.[33] He attended Hyundai Chungun High School in Dong-gu, Ulsan and was admitted to a private acting institution when he was sixteen years old.[34] Chanyeol has been a fan of musical instruments since his primary school years and has cited the film School of Rock to be his main influence in inspiring him to learn the drums.

During middle school, Chanyeol formed the band "Heavy Noise" with his friends.[35] After winning second place in a televised uniform modeling contest in 2008,[36] Chanyeol successfully auditioned for S.M. Entertainment through the S.M. Casting System. During this time, he was involved in his school's band, "Seiren."[35] He made several media appearances prior to his debut with Exo, including TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" with Suho and Kai in 2008, and in 2010, he starred in the music video of Girls' Generation Japanese single, "Genie". He was also featured as a cameo in Girls' Generation-TTS's Twinkle's music video along with fellow members Kai, Sehun, and Baekhyun.

Chanyeol was the twelfth and last member of EXO to be formally introduced to the public, on February 23, 2012. He cites Jason Mraz and Eminem to be his biggest influences[37] Chanyeol guest starred in the second episode of the 2013 sitcom, Royal Villa, with fellow member Sehun. He also appeared in K.Will's music video You Don't Know Love.

In 2014 Chanyeol was a member of SBS's Law of the Jungle in Micronesia and the first season of SBS's Roommate but left in September because of scheduling conflicts. He made his big screen debut in the 2015 film Salut d'Amour alongside Moon Ga-young and Han Ji-min, the former having co-starred with Chanyeol in EXO's web drama EXO Next Door. He was also featured in the 2015 JTBC's variety show Dating Alone.

Ravi[edit]

Ravi (Korean: 디오) is one of the main vocalists of EXO, and the other main vocalist of its sub-group EXO-K.[38] Born Do Kyungsoo (Korean: 도경수; Hanja: 都暻秀) on (1993-01-12) January 12, 1993 (age 31)[32] in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. D.O. has been singing since primary school and was an avid participant in local singing competitions throughout his high school career. In 2010, he was recommended to audition for S.M. Entertainment after winning at a local singing festival.[39] He subsequently became an S.M. Entertainment trainee during his last two years of high school.[35] He performed Na Yoon-kwon's "Anticipation" and Brown Eyed Soul's "My Story" at his S.M. audition.[39]

D.O. was formally introduced as the eighth member of Exo on January 30, 2012.[40] His stage name is derived from his family name, Do.[41] He sees Yoo Young-jin, S.M.'s music producer, as his role model.[42] On July 29, 2013, he was featured in f(x)'s song "Goodbye Summer", a track from their album Pink Tape.

D.O. also had his feature film debut in the movie Cart. He became 2nd member from EXO to have his own solo OST "Crying Out" (외침) for the movie.[43] He played the role of Han Kang Woo in the SBS' drama It's Okay, That's Love, starring Jo In-sung and Gong Hyo-jin in the lead roles.[44] With his acting in It's Okay, That's Love, D.O. was nominated for and won several awards as a new actor. In May 2015, SM confirmed that D.O. would take on his first lead role in a big screen piece, Pure Love, as a young man in love with a sick girl in a relationship of innocent love.

Hongbin[edit]

Kai (Korean: 카이) was born Kim Jongin (Korean: 김종인; Hanja: 金鍾仁) on (1994-01-14) January 14, 1994 (age 30)[32] in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. The first Exo member to sign with S.M. Entertainment, Kai joined the company after winning in the 10th S.M. Youth Best Contest in 2007, at thirteen years old. He said that it was Shinhwa who inspired him to be a dancer.[39]

Known as the group's main dancer, Kai has been dancing since he was eight years old and was trained in jazz dance and ballet. He stated that his parents initially wanted him to learn Taekwondo and the piano, but he quickly lost interest in both. After watching The Nutcracker when he was in fourth grade, Kai expressed his wish to study ballet professionally. He developed his current technical expertise of hip hop, popping, and locking after joining S.M. Entertainment.[39] In 2008, Kai made a brief appearance in TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" along with EXO's Suho and Chanyeol.

Kai was the first of twelve Exo members to be formally introduced to the public through teaser trailers. His first teaser was released on December 23, 2011.[45] He appeared in twelve more trailers released in the next three months, and had his first televised performance with EXO-M's Lu Han, Chen and Tao on SBS's Gayo Daejun event on December 29, 2011. Kai graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul in February 2012.

Kai is also associated with the promotional singing group, Younique Unit, with EXO-M's Lu Han, and S.M. Entertainment's dance group, S.M. The Performance, with EXO-M's Lay. He also appeared as a cameo on Girls' Generation-TTS's Twinkle MV with fellow members Sehun, Baekhyun and Chanyeol. He was featured in Shinee's Lee Taemin's song "Pretty Boy".[46]

Hyuk[edit]

Sehun (Korean: 오세훈; Hanja: 吳世勳), born Oh Sehun on (1994-04-12) April 12, 1994 (age 30)[32] in Seoul, South Korea. He is the youngest in EXO. Sehun was scouted by a casting agent on the streets when he was twelve, and was finally cast into S.M. Entertainment in 2008, after going through four auditions in two years. On January 10, 2012, he was introduced as the fifth member of EXO.[47]

Sehun made a brief appearance in Girls' Generation-TTS's music video for "Twinkle" alongside fellow members Baekhyun, Chanyeol, and Kai. He graduated from the School of Performing Arts Seoul in February 2013. Sehun starred as a cameo and guest in the second episode of the 2013 sitcom, Royal Villa, with fellow member Chanyeol. He has performed in a various number of BoA's live performances for her track 'Only One' and has also featured in her music video for 'Who are you' from BoA's eighth Korean-language studio album, Kiss My Lips.
