Qian Kun (Chinese Simplified: 钱锟; born January 1st, 1996), known by his stage name Kun, was born in Sanming, China, and is a Chinese singer. He is a member of the South Korean boy group NCT under SM Entertainment. In 2018, he debuted in NCT, and in 2019, he debuted in the Chinese-based team WayV, with Kun being appointed as leader.

Early life[edit]

Kun was born on January 1st, 1996 in Sanming, Fujian Province, China. He is an only child. He attended Taining elementary school, Taining No.1 middle school, and Beijing Modern Music Training College. On May 25th, 2018, he delivered a speech at his graduation ceremony [2].

In first grade, Kun participated in the school's singing competition "Campus Singer" and won first place. In third grade, he began hosting literary and artistic activities at school. The Education and Cultural Bureau of Taining County invited him to host other children's programs. In his second year of middle school, he worked as a school announcer. By chance, he was spotted by a cultural media company in Beijing for imitating Vitas' dolphin sound. The company wanted to bring him to Beijing for training, but his parents refused because they didn't want him away from home. However, they allowed him to continue his music education. His parents bought him a piano and guitar for him to practice. When he was 15, Kun started writing his own songs. He wrote songs like "Tuesday", "Forget", "The Old Man Returns", "Because I Love You", "For the Dragon", and others [3][4]. In November 2011, Kun participated on the show "Search for New Tigers" without telling his family, and was able to advance to the top 10. In September 2012, he went to Taiwan for training.

In 2015 while attending university in Beijing, Kun passed the SM Entertainment auditions in Guangzhou and became a trainee. On December 19, 2015, he was announced in SM Rookies [5]. Before debuting as a member of NCT, he participated in multiple activities. On April 9th, 2016, he accompanied NCT U at the 16th Annual Music Chart Gala and performed the Chinese version of the single "Without You" with members Taiichi, Daoying, and Zai hyun [6]. On May 9th, he starred on the NCT variety show "NCT Life in Seoul".

2018: Debut with WayV and NCT[edit]

On January 31st, 2018, SM Entertainment released the trailer for "NCT 2018 Yearbook #1" showing Kun officially joining NCT [7]. On March 14th, NCT released their first official album "NCT 2018 Empathy". The album includes the Chinese single "Without You" and the song "Black on Black" sung by all NCT members.

On January 17th, 2019, WayV released their first digital album "The Vision" [8]. On December 24th, Kun joined the MBC music beauty program "Pink Festa" with Gao Junxi, Kim Jong Kuo, Huang Guangxi, and Kim Minkui [9].

On February 28th, 2020, the song "I'll Be There" was released to support people during the COVID-19 Pandemic [10]. He performed the song with Zhou Mi and fellow WayV member Xiaojun. In October, Kun became a regular host for "Pink Festa" [11]. On December 6th, he joined the South Korean radio station eFM as a regular host and appeared in the program "Top of Music Seoul" every Sunday. He later left the program on August 22nd, 2021.

On June 16th, 2021, WayV formed its first subunit with Kun and Xiaojun, forming WayV Kun&Xiaojun. They released their first single album "Back To You" [12]. On October 1st, Kun became a DJ for the radio station tbs eFM's "Ledong Seoul" [13]. On September 28, 2022, he left the radio show after his one-year DJ program special aired on October 1st.

Personal life[edit]

Kun became interested in music because of his idol Jay Chou, and he has created music from an early age. He is a graduate from the Beijing Modern Music Training Institute. He often collaborates with famous musicians from other countries and uploads original songs on his personal sites like Weibo, Instagram, and SoundCloud. He has also helped arrange some songs for WayV.

He is skilled in video editing, often editing films for groups, and occasionally posting his video series "KUN's Cloud".

He became interested in magic after seeing Liu Qian's magic performance at the 2008 Spring Festival Gala. He often uses magic as a skill to showcase to his fans.
