Surname[edit]

To whoever may be interested in weird spelling of the surname: During the Soviet times (when she was born) there was a tradition to issue international passports where the names in Latin alphabet were spelled according to French spelling rules. Today Belarussian surnames are spelled in another weird way (if one remembers that most Belarusians are used to Russian spelling in official texts), but this is another story. For example, my friend "Vladimir" has great troubles explaining his colleagues in the US what the heck "Uladzimir" is. And another my friend Nick is routinely called Mike, Michael, and even female-ish Mikalia :-), because of Belarusian spelling "Mikalai" for Nicholas (Russian: Nikolai).
