19th century

• 1865 – Compañia del ferrocarril de Zaragoza a Pamplona opens between Irurzun and Alsasua, Spain.
• 1893 – Robert S. Lovett succeeds Leland Stanford as the president of the Southern Pacific Company, parent company of the Southern Pacific Railroad, after Stanford's death. The Chairmanship position vacated by Stanford remains vacant for another 16 years.

20th century

• 1915 – New York City Subway's BMT Sea Beach Line opens.
• 1940 – The French rail system is placed under control of the German Army.

21st century

• 2005 – The entire network of the Swiss Federal Railways shuts down due to a power failure in its overhead wire system (just over 95% of the railroad's network). The power failure also affects international transit through Switzerland as such intercity trains use the same system. Initial reports indicate that the power failure started with a voltage drop in Ticino (in the St. Gotthard region) that then spread to the entire system.
• 2011 – Shenzhen Metro's Line 5 opens.

• 1827 – Daniel Howe Newton, president of the Hoosac Tunnel and Wilmington Railroad 1887–1905, is born.
• 1860 – Robert S. Lovett, president of Southern Pacific Railroad 1909–1911, is born (d. 1932).

• 2015 – Tama, the stationmaster cat in Wakayama Electric Railway Kishi Station (Wakayama) is passed away (1999-2015).
