Site is in the spamlist in Russian Wikipedia[1]. The whole website is in Russian, there are very few English phrases, and these phrases have no encyclopedic value. Website owner was recently blocked[2] on Russian Wiki, and decided to target English Wiki instead. Diffs: [3], [4], [5], [6]. Had a look, these are all personal websites on sites.google.com, and I see some use where I would find it questionable. XLinkBot??

I also ran into the editor at Personal rapid transit. Repeatedly spammed on lists of journals e.g. here, here, here and here. Registered user Phd.deepak indef. blocked for repeatedly creating a spam article about this site and also linkspamming the url but reappeared as anon IP 192.8.220.8 who has now been blocked twice for linkspamming. Muvy.tk

Stubborn and ongoing spamming with a Muvy.tk link in List of video editing software during the last 12 months, even though it's always speedily removed. Blocking does not help. After being blocked as 71.230.210.59, he was re-adding the link as Carboxylic, and when Carboxylic was blocked indefinitely, he is re-adding it as 64.134.66.240. Non-English site that seems to be promoting some dodgy live chat service. Repeatedly added to Badoo (eg [8], [9], [10], [11]), sometimes as multiple inline links. Frequency and extent of linking appear to be escalating (preceding diffs were in reverse chronological order). Semi-protection is undesirable as this article receives constructive edits from IPs and new accounts (eg [12], [13], [14]). Warnings have been futile as the links are added by different IPs. Only additions of this link in article space have been by the above user, who has been warned about spamming and COI before. Tonight when I removed a new addition and then went through the 20 other additions that the user had made of his own website to articles, he went ballistic putting all sorts of rants on my talk page. This ended up in him being banned for 12 hours - partly for likening me to a fascist, which given my family history I find deeply offensive and upsetting. I think, given the user's shameless self-promotion of his website, coupled with bad behaviour and refusal to accept that COI and spamming is wrong, the site should be added to the blacklist ASAP. --Simple Bob (talk) 22:55, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are several issues here:
  • The value of Wyrdlight's photos and links.
  • Wyrdlight's conflict of interest in adding them to articles.
  • Wyrdlight's persistence in adding them to articles.
  • Wyrdlight's recent interactions with Simple Bob.
Taking the last item first, another administrator has pointed out the problems and then, when they continued, briefly blocked Wyrdlight. I'm hopeful they won't recur, especially since it's hopefully been made clear to him our feelings about this sort of thing.
As for the quality of Wyrdlight's material, I think it's excellent, however Wyrdlight should not be adding them himself to articles. I think this has recently been explained more emphatically to him and I hope he now understands our outlook on the conflict of interest issue. I have suggested he propose future additions on article talk pages for other editors to consider; I think he'll find a receptive audience in many cases. The material won't be added quite as quickly as he might like but I think he'll be surprised at the increase in organic growth over time; it's already showing up on the German, French, Chinese and Russian Wikipedias. Despite his seeming stubbornness, Wyrdlight seems to really care about Wikipedia and not just his own material so I am optimistic he will not add his photos and links directly to our articles in the future. --A. I am not sure why my domain was blacklisted. I am a Physicist (Michael Burns) presently a Visiting Scholar at Boston College ([17]), with over 50 scientific research articles published in major refereed scientific and engineering journals. My michaelburns.net domain is a personal website, however it does get linked to quite a bit as copies of many of my scientific research articles can be downloaded from michaelburns.net for free. Those scientific and engineering articles are authoritative sources used by others in my field. There are other technical materials on michaelburns.net that get occasionally linked, but the main point is that this website has no commercial aspects to it. My concern with it being blacklisted by Wikipedia is that blacklists tend to propagate without any vetting. Movie Review Intelligence would like to have its URL on its article for the same reason that others do -- so that people can have the opportunity to learn more when they want to research the topic.  Not done for now. Actually, per WP:FANSITE, fan sites don't "need" to be listed anywhere, since they contain no official information and cannot be considered reliable sources. Although, if Idina Menzel's people are on record that they interact with the idina-here.com staff to share information, I agree that this fansite may be a notch higher on the reliability scale, and a link could appear in the article. no Declined. Being a legitimate source doesn't equate to being a reliable source. Saiyanisland appears to be a blog and therefore shouldn't be used as a reliable source in articles. The history of saiyanisland links on Wikipedia reveal that they quickly get deleted on WP:RS grounds. Looking over the site, it seems they do publish articles of reliable information, but when they do, they link to the actual sources -- in which case Wikipedia articles should be referencing those sources as well. I found this blog by spending many ours on google querying and searching for information on this instrument (el cuatro venezolano) and I've found micuatro.com to be the best and the most comprehensive in the area. I believe that many people will benefit from this site to be allowed to be referenced by wikipedia, that's why I came to add the link but found that it was black listed.

Hi, I am trying to put this article about how Glee helped Paramore reach the charts again because on October 16, 2010 this song was at #25 and Glee's version was at #26. Hi, I have been creating and improving articles on Japanese Movies on wikipedia for sometime now. I noticed that my important source of information was blacklisted and thus cannot be used to quote. I did a check and found out that 2 years ago, AsianMediaWiki was placed on wikipedia's blacklist due to errors on not being up with wiki etiquette. However, in that time, it has grown into an important and reliable source of information for editors of the Asian cinema, Asian TV and Asian actors.

Further Reasons:

  1. It has many entries that Wikipedia itself lack. (Eg:What the Snow Brings-a award winning film. This is not the case in Asianmediawiki). This therefore can be a very useful reference and a rich source of pictures for the creator of these pages to consider.
  2. It has translated many articles from their native language (Eg: Japanese, Korean, Thai etc.). Hence, it is useful to editors whom are unfamiliar to these languages. Also, they provide the original name of the article, useful for editors who are familiar with those language to search for the movie on Google and translate it to put on Wikipedia (sometimes the movie's English name is very different from its native name, and often the websites in the native language are more reliable).
  3. Although it may not be the most reliable source, it is by far one of the most reliable third-party source (this is required under Wikipedia's editing rules) as compared to blogs and other dubious websites.It is also bound to wiki rules similar with Wikipedia- that is to edit with a neutral point of view, and therefore does away with too much biased text. Also,the text are free to the users and can be distributed freely. Many other reputable website often copy their information as well.
  4. Frequently, Google search results(eg for Snow Prince),the pages on Asianmediawiki ranks top and way above the Wikipedia equivalent of it.
  5. It only allows registered users to edit their pages, therefore making them more reliable.
  6. Lastly, it provides a source of movie posters and screen shots can can also be applied to Wikipedia to better explain and improve the quality of these Wikipedia articles.

I am trying to update the Microsoft Ants page. It says that Microsoft Ants is retired. However, Microsoft ants is still playable from Voolby. the site is however blacklisted, and the admins will not let me update the Microsoft Ants wiki page, letting people know that the game is not dead and can still be played online. The only place to see that though is from the voolby page where they can play it. So could you remove that site from the blacklist so I can cite the source, so people will know that Ants is not retired or dead and can still be played. Anonymous IP addresses are constantly adding spam links to that site on various articles. Microsoft Ants, Age of Kings and its expansion pack article, and I earlier rollbacked an IP address that never did any edits at all, for spamming it to a Tom Clancy game. Wikipedia has a lot of information regarding clothing sizes however one of the problems is that many countries have their own scales and they arn't always correct as I've found. We've painstakenly made sure that the sizes are actually correct and gathered it all on the site to make sure that people don't have to "fish" for help in converting country sizes. COIBot - LinkSaver

I am working on a rewrite of the part of COIBot that saves the link-reports on wiki. My main goals there are to make it more normally coded, so that the different types of reports ('LinkReport','Local','XWiki') all are looking alike, and that the data is re-used for the different reports on the different wikis.

The format on-wiki has significantly changed, the old LinkReports give more info about the users and the links, and the data is now handled by templates (User:COIBot/EditSummary and User:COIBot/OtherLinks (the latter embedded in the former)). COIBot at the moment passes all data into the parameters (note: some are likely to disappear to save space, others will come up when I have them available; feel free to edit the templates; use the fields that are there, but try to use the most basic ones (e.g., construct a diff-url from 'wiki','revid' and 'oldid', do not use 'diffurl'), I'm sure the readability can be improved (note, I will add a start and end template around it, which can be used to modify the data further). Also a lot of the rest of the text can be changed by changing settings here or on meta (I am still working on that). If you find anything in the new reports that you think would be nice to have, which is wrong (just found one, see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Spam/Local/globolstaff.com -> the bot should convert domains to lowercase; solved), or other suggestions there, please poke me.

As I said, I wanted to format it so that the data is exchangeable between the different reports and different wikis. That had as the nice advantage, that any report can be saved 'locally'. For en.wikipedia, that means that the en.wikipedia part of the tree of local reports (see m:Category:COIBot Local Reports can also be saved on en.wikipedia (and with a slight change of settings, also on ... vi.wikiquote.org, but lets first do en.wikipedia only). Those reports are now available in Category:Local COIBot Reports.

The working of the reports is the same as on meta (the XWiki reports). When handling a request, change the status in the 'LinkStatusLocal' template, which is located at the bottom. Normally it will be 'open', change it to 'close' (if handled or cleaned, or not a problem anymore), 'ignore' (if it is likely to return, but it is fine). The state 'stale' can be used, but that is a state that COIBot will put reports in itself when it notices that activity has ceased (e.g. no new link additions for 1 week) or other reasons. 'Close'd and 'Stale' reports will be reopened by COIBot when the bots see that the 'suspect' activity resumes, 'ignore'd reports will stay ignored, though they may receive new data every now and then.

When commenting, do that in the report, at the very bottom of the discussion section, after the tag that says so (everything in front of that tag will be overwritten upon regeneration). Note: I will ask User:Erwin to see if he can add the 'add' gadget which is available on meta also here, with the option of also having it work for XLinkBot.

Things that I am working on to add:

  • Reinstate the 'check top edit if the link is still there'.
  • Improved autostale (e.g., if there are no links left anymore, then the report can go stale, no urgency).
  • Have a good think about the link between the different wikis. At the moment, reports exist on meta and here .. I'm not sure yet what should be done if we close a report here with the sister-report on meta, or vice versa.

Note, these are 'auto caught' links. The linkwatchers (m:User:LiWa3 do their basic statistics like counting how often an editor uses a certain domain, and compares that with other counts on the user and the domain. When it passes certain thresholds, it reports. Note, the reports only show that a certain link is used in a suspect way, it is, by no means, a sign that the link is bad, or that the editor is doing something bad. It may be a new, unexperienced user, who nonetheless has found a unique domain and uses that domain mainly, while no-one else yet does. Please be careful with analysis of these reports, apply a good dose of WP:AGF.

Spam blacklist doesn't catch URLs not starting http?

With reference to this diff, it would seem that it's possible to make an edit to a page where a citation contains |url=www.blacklistedsite.com, but not |url=http://www.blacklistedsite.com i.e. where http:// is added. If the user is spamming/pushing a non-working link then that is a form of blacklist evasion which would warrant an immediate block (and editors did get indeffed for that; these fall in the same category as spammers who use a redirect service to get their link in anyway). If it is good faith use, revert the edit, and leave the editor a remark (and point to the whitelist, if necessary). --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:38, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Spider-Man

On Spider-Man article it says that Spider-Man is one of the most popular and successfull commercial superheroes with a citation needed tag. Hubpages.com had a Top ten most famous comic/cartoon characters stating this making it a good source but it's on the blacklist even though it's not spam. − Jhenderson 777 20:20, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There may be good information there, but we are not going to de-list the whole domain for that. Preview

So why doesn't Wikipedia flag the site on an edit preview? Discouraging to spend time trying to make sure your edit is good and then have it pink box you when you go to save. Gerardw (talk) 00:39, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just guessing, but checking the blacklist would be a fairly intense operation for the server, and a good editor might preview several times, and blacklisted links occur very rarely, and a link may be blacklisted while you are previewing, so the check has to occur at save anyway.
