Dora (Russian: Дора, real name: Да́рья Серге́евна Шиха́нова, English: Daria Sergeevna Shihanova, born in November 30th, 1999 in Saratov, Russia) - Russian singer specialized in teenage pop-rock.[1]

Biography (singer)[edit]

Childhood[edit]

Daria is from Saratov. As a child, she was interested in pop music, initially listening to Russian performers who were broadcast on the radio, but later became interested in foreign artists. Daria herself referred to her favorite songs as "When You're Gone" Avril Lavigne and "If I Were a Boy" Beyonce. Despite the girl's desire to study at a music school, her parents were against giving her a classical education[2]. Daria tried to take lessons classical guitar, but dropped out on her own, finding them boring and uninteresting. Later, in the ninth grade, she still decided to study one song on her own for a school performance — it was "Radioactive" from Imagine Dragons. A successful concert inspired the girl to continue mastering the guitar[3].

The beginning of a creative path[edit]

Under the influence of the band The Retuses, Daria began recording cover versions of her favorite songs. Initially, she repeated the same songs that were performed by the leader of The Retuses Mikhail Rodionov — "Shagane", "The fire was blue". Covers Daria started recording songs at the age of fifteen, when she was in the ninth grade of school. Six months later, she came up with and recorded her own song for the first time, but considered the attempt unsuccessful — сovers in her performance was liked by others more than her own work.[3]

In 2017, Daria's interests changed — instead of indie rock and she was interested in emo rap, in particular, the album '17' by XXXTentacion. This was due, in particular, to emotional problems after transferring to a new school, where the girl was bullied by classmates.[3]

Daria's first live performance took place in the [Podolsk] club "Smena" — it was a concert organized by the public "Forever XVII".[4]. Daria performed popular sad songs, such as "The blue fire was swept away", a poem of Sergey Yesenin, "There is no way out" of the group "Splin" and others[3]

At first, Daria recorded her songs on iPhone. Later, she met beatmaker, who helped the singer with recording instrumental parts and arrangements. One of the first songs recorded in this way was thw song "Melted" by Leonid Fedorov. The singer liked to perform songs to the accompaniment of beats, and she decided to continue the collaboration. Later, they began recording Daria's own songs, some of which were included in her debut album. At that time, Daria performed under the nickname "Mental Affection" and wrote depressive songs. One of them, called "Relapse", was based on the text of an acquaintance who had problems with his parents and had thoughts of suicide; Daria later admitted that she was ashamed of this song. The singer also discovered autotune and began to use it in her compositions, the first of which was "I don't swear", which Daria considered a real creative breakthrough.[3]

Debut album[edit]

The singer's debut mini-album was titled "I am not commerce" and was released in 2019 in her own public. By that time, Daria had abandoned the pseudonym "Mental Affection", which was difficult for fans to remember, and began performing under the name "Dora", because that's what Daria's mother called her.[2]. During the week, the number of users subscribed to Daria on social networks doubled. When the number of subscribers reached 40-50 thousand, Daria began to think about releasing a full-fledged album. She met rapper Vladimir Galat from the group "FRENDZONA" and together they came up with the song "Doradura" and also completed several compositions. By the way, the track "Doradura" was the only one that was created from scratch in her debut album. As a result, these songs were included in the album "Little Sister", recorded with the support of Galat's friends who were engaged in beatmaking and mixing. Despite the doubts of the authors, "Doradura" became a real hit. Daria herself was not surprised by the increase in popularity, as she purposefully went to this for several years, equating to the creativity of Grechka and Monetochka that "shot" in a similar way earlier[3]

"Little Sister" was a pop-rock combination of girlish vocals and heavy guitar music. Dora herself called her special style "cute rock", which translates as "cute rock". The songs were dedicated to issues that worried the teenage audience — relationships between young people, social networks, jealous girlfriends, dating on the Internet, etc. Dora's page Vkontakte gained more than 90 thousand subscribers, and in the first day the album was played on social networks more than 300 thousand times. In March 2020, the singer performed on On the first channel in the program "Evening Urgant", performing the song "Doradura".[5][6]. The second studio album "God Save the cute-rock" was released on December 18, 2020[7]. The song "Got into a Crush", performed by Dora in Italian under the name "Innamorata", was included in the New Year's edition of the Evening Urgant "Ciao, 2020!", which entered the trends of Russian and Italian YouTube[8][9]
