- 1542 – Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo became the first European to set foot on Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of California.
- 1571 – A Western Christian coalition inflicted a significant defeat upon the Ottoman Navy near the Gulf of Corinth in the Battle of Lepanto, the first major Ottoman loss to European powers.
- 1763 – King George III of the United Kingdom issued a Royal Proclamation closing most of New France to the residents of the Thirteen Colonies and reserving it for indigenous peoples.
- 1849 – American writer Edgar Allan Poe died under mysterious circumstances at Washington Medical College four days after being found on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland, in a delirious and incoherent state.
- 1868 – Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, was inaugurated, with an initial enrollment of 412 students the next day.
- 1913 – The Highland Park Ford Plant in the Detroit area of Michigan became the world's first car factory to implement a moving assembly line, eventually reducing Ford Model T production time from 6 hours to 93 minutes.
- 1916 – Georgia Tech defeated Cumberland University 222–0 in the most lopsided college football game in American history.
- 1988 – Near Point Barrow in Alaska, an Iñupiat hunter discovered three gray whales trapped in pack ice, which resulted in an international effort to free them.
- 1991 – Croatian War of Independence: The Yugoslav People's Army conducted an air strike on Banski dvori, the official residence of the Government of Croatia in Zagreb.
- 2006 – Russian journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya was assassinated in the elevator of her apartment block in central Moscow.
- 2008 – 2008 TC3 exploded above the Nubian Desert in Sudan, the first time that an asteroid impact had been predicted prior to its entry into the atmosphere as a meteor.

- 1513 – War of the League of Cambrai: A Venetian army under Bartolomeo d'Alviano was decisively defeated by the Spanish army commanded by Ramón de Cardona and Fernando d'Avalos.
- 1780 – American Revolutionary War: Patriots and Loyalist militias engaged each other at the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina.
- 1800 – The French privateer Robert Surcouf led a 150-man crew to capture the 40-gun, 437-man East Indiaman Kent.
- 1958 – Attempting to control the political instability in Pakistan, President Iskander Mirza (pictured) suspended the 1956 constitution, imposed martial law, and dissolved the National Assembly.
- 1985 – As a result of severe flooding in Puerto Rico, at least 130 people died as a result of the deadliest single landslide on record in North America.
