Adventures With Purpose is a group of investigators, scuba divers, and specialty equipment that dives in local waterways, such as canals, lakes, and basins to find missing persons. They document and post their efforts on their Youtube channel. They completely donate their services and do not charge families, and thus bill themselves as a "philanthropic journey" organization.

Background

Adventures with Purpose is founded by Oregon-based Sam Ginn and Jared Leisek in 2019.[2] They began as a environmental cleanup agency, removing cars that were polluting waterways.[3][4] Doug Bishop joined the group as well, and also owned a towing company.[5] After twice finding cars with missing people in them, they determined a need to look for people who have gone missing in or with their vehicles.[6] The channel receives tip-offs and requests from the public through their social media accounts.[2] They do not accept rewards from family or charge the families or police involved. Instead, the channel funds the searches through video views, subscribers, donations and merchandise sales.[4] However in 2020, they had threatened to sue for a $100,000 reward pledged by five anonymous donors in relation to the discovery of Ethan Kazmerzak, who had disappered since 2013.[7] The Kazmerzak family gave the team an undetermined amount of money.[4] As of 2022, the team has six members.[6]

Process

At the identified waterways or waterbody,[8] the team would begin traversing the waters and scan the bottom of the waterbody with sonar technology. Upon identifying area(s) of interest, they would circle the area for further identification through the digital display. They would then drop a heavy duty magnet, tied to a scuba dive line, for a positive identification that it is a car laying on the bottom of the waterbody. An orange bouy would then be tied to the other end of the line if the magnet would stuck to what they had identified, thereby marking the spot for divers to dive under for a visual identification. Divers with radios and camera would dive to the car to assess the make and model, and to look for license plate.[9]

Cases

To date the group has solved 24 missing person cases.[4]
