A Cookie for your work behind-the-scene's on various currency articles
On a number of occasions now I've noticed you've made a whole series of benificial but tedious improvements to various currency articles. These are mostly the type of improvements that are behind the scene's (formatting, wikifying, etc.) and thus might go unrecognized, so I wanted to take a moment to thank you and let you know it's appreciated. Just wanted to say a massive thanks for your work on the Election results template. Not only is it a big help for getting some consistency in presentation, but the automatic totalling and percentage calculation has helped identify several errors in the tables (both from editors mistranscribing numbers from sources, and mistakes in the sources themselves) by comparing the automatically-calculated totals/percentages with those given in the original tables/sources. This will be a big help in maintaining accuracy! Number 57 22:32, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination for deletion of Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary

From my talk page back in september.

Bugger bugger bugger, I saw a map in the transport museum in budapest we went the other week and it had the lat and long but in pretty much a mercator projection. My missus was more interested with the toy trains so I didn't get a chance to take the measures off it. If it's wrong (as it is) it should be deleted but I am still trying to get the measures right. The thing is it's specifically Kingdom of Hungary, but the more atlases (atli? :) I look at the more different lats and longs I get. And anything one does on Hungarian articles is rather contentious, so it is probably really better deleted. Because people whose great grandfathers were part of the Kingdom of Hungary will say no that's Croatia or Slovakia or Slovenia or Yugoslavia or Jugoslavia or The People's Republic of East Kebab. Since Hungarian politics is very contentious and goes on racist grounds in far more than would be allowed in where I come from, this is better off deleted. (Hint: say Treaty of Trianon to a Hungarian and await results.) Si Trew (talk) 09:36, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hungary ethic groups.jpg
I never did get round to this. I took the coords off of file at right, which is very high quality but seems to have an odd idea of where 0 longitude is (it suggests it is east of Paris, but that didn't seem to work). As you suggested, I tried to take well-known points at the edges of the map: Fiume, for example, at south-west. I took very good readings after printing out this map at A0 size and using ruler and compass, my trig is quite good, but I could never get it to fit. Si Trew (talk) 06:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
.Oh, Template:Location_map_Kingdom_of_Hungary/test might help you. You see, Fiume's in the right place but Budapest is a bit too far left and the rest are well out. Si Trew (talk) 06:09, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That map uses the Paris meridian. It's not a Mercator projection, the lines of latitude aren't quite parallel. Maproom (talk) 20:09, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, thanks for the tip. I have written code for generating coefficients for nonlinear projections if I know the functional form. but, the code requires at least as many reference points as there are coefficients. basically a nonlinear least-squares algorithm. the problem here is that other than the reference markings on the side of the map, it's tough to get reference points in the middle. Frietjes (talk) 21:18, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Si Trew, should we just give up on Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary and have it deleted? Frietjes (talk) 21:20, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How many do you need in the middle? You get get a reference point near each corner by specifying where the nearest line of (Paris) longitude would cross the nearest line of latitude, and use towns like Szolnok (which Google Earth says is 47°10'N 20°11'E Greenwich) in the middle. Maproom (talk) 21:37, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, now that I look at it again, I think we have enough with the two interior intersection points and the points along the edges. the original question was about the image in Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary which is less clear. for File:Hungary-ethnic_groups.jpg, I think we can make a working location map. thank you again. Frietjes (talk) 21:42, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just a thought, maybe not very coherent at this time of night. Using an ethnographic map as a location map may, as Si Trew pointed out, be contentious. Will it help if instead I upload to Commons this map? It uses a Ferro meridian, which is no worse than Paris, and shows enough towns such as Szolnok for central reference points. Maproom (talk) 22:02, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, that may help. let's see what Si Trew says. my main focus is turning map images into working location maps. I don't really have a strong feeling about the particular map image, so long as it is created with a well-defined projection. Frietjes (talk) 22:06, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just asking out of curiosity – how do you "turn a map image into a location map"? Do you warp it into the Mercator projection that the template requires? Or do you supply the template with a transform function? Maproom (talk) 07:24, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, supply the transformation function. see, for example, module:Location map/data/Canada. if I know the functional form and a sufficient number of reference points, I can numerically solve for the coefficients. Frietjes (talk) 12:40, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. It's reassuring to see that things are done in such a sensible and comprehensible way. Incidentally – if you ever find a map image at http://maproom.org/ that you could use in Wikipedia, please let me know and I'll put it on Commons. Maproom (talk) 09:46, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pinging me in on this. I know it was a long time ago. User:Maproom, yes I did guess it was the Paris Meridian all that time ago, but that didn't seem quite to fit either. Since then I took something and with Inkscape made a four-colour map (five if you include Lake Balaton as a fifth colour, blue, but could have been made a fourth colour as those that surround it are all in three other colours, it is just more pleasant to have it in blue but not mathematically necessary) and split out all the layers and borders and so on into separate layers on the SVG. I seem to recall I called it Template:Location Map Hungary2 or something – and I emphasise this is not the Kingdom of Hungary but the modern-day Hungary. All I had left to do was get the text labelling right. Searching for "a new look for an old map" was something roughly want some commenter said, may well have been User:Frietjes here but may not have been (a long time ago, just going from memory: and those exact words are what was printed on the front of the first H C Beck fold-up London Underground Diagram (often called "Map"; Beck himself never called it a map: I have good references for this from publications of the London Transport Museum in woodware) of 1933, so I am probably confusing those words with the same sentiment expressed. This is all such a long time ago, I give as hints for those who can search better than I.
On the plus side, by pure coincidence (these are not common around here in Budapest) my local pub has a nice 1898ish German (I think) map of Austria-Hungary; certainly pre-Treaty of Trianon. This is a five or six colour map and I am pretty sure it is in German but I am going from memory, I don't think it's in Hungarian. It would be about 40 by 25 inches (1,020 mm × 640 mm) and I daresay somehow I could get it scanned in, in one of the largescale printers in the town (who I happen to be also on good terms with, for various other reasons) or just take four A3 scans and stitch them with photoshop, assuming that my scanner doesn't distort too much. I am on good terms with the landlord as I have given him my British registration plates and various other British pub memorablia, it is that kind of pub, very much a "local", so I can ask to borrow the map (it's framed) or just go in on a quiet afternoon with a straightedge etc and try to get some measures off that. I think it is not the same as the image is here, though quite similar. As a start shall I get the maker etc, would that help at all, before I do the trig etc off it? I have a very good straightedge and fifty quids worth of setsquare adjustable protractor that I use for technical drawing on my A0 drawing board, it's about 25 inches (640 mm) long on its hypotenuese, which should be enough to measure angles and distances with some kinda veracity, I am not sure of the projection without looking again. Is it worth me taking a look and reporting back, probably will be about UTC+2 Friday tomorrow, else Monday? If you give me some nice trig points "in the middle" I will do my best to give you the readings off of them. These won't be 100% accuracy but will be within a second of arc or two through the distortion of the glass in the frame, I would imagine. Si Trew (talk) 16:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I understand if it is WP:COPYVIO etc but if I check the maker first, it may very well turn out not to be because of the date and also various other "things that have happened since", could well be PD or fair use. I think I check the maker first, that is clear enough in top right corner but don't remember offhand. Would that be of any use, at least to confirm or deny if it's the same as this one? It reminded me of this one, when I first saw it, but I think it is different but of about the same time. Si Trew (talk) 16:40, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
File:Hungary_location_map.svg is the one I made the four-colour svg version of. It just needs tidying on the text labels layer if I remember right, I can't remember its name. The computer it was on is long gone. File:Hungary location map2.svg? Something like that. We have File:Hungary location map-2.jpg on Commons, but that's not it, cos it's not four-colour and has labels in Cyrillic, is a jpg not an svg. Perhaps unfortunately it got deleted as unused. I'd need to ask an admin to dredge from about 2009 onwards. Users working on it would have been mostly me and perhaps occasionally the missus, no longer editing at Wikipedia for many a year due to very harsh and undeserved comments after excellent translations of English articles about the Tudors into HU:WP (something she is an expert in, more than I know and I'm bloody English): Her username was/is User:Monkap. Si Trew (talk) 16:51, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OK, the map you included wrongfooted me, this is exactly the map that is nominated (duh!) I was looking at the map you included on the right. No, don't give up on it, I'll try to fix it. It is nearly OK, all the coords and borders and counties etc are done on separate labels and I think it is much better than the boring brown map transcluded via {{Infobox Hungarian settlement}}. We just need to fix the edges and fix the text-label layer for some reason the font doesn't scale properly, I never did work out why, I shall try again. One reason to separate into different layers in a good GIS fashion is so that with a flick of the wrist one can turn off all the labels, turn off e.g. the county borders, make all the counties brown and just fill one particular county in a different colour (for Hungarian county articles) etc etc etc. I hand-edited the XML for the SVG to make it all nice, it's much much nicer than its predecessor for putting into a GIS etc because each county edge and county border and county name etc is labeleed in a very consistent fashion. The underlying SVG is File:Kingdom_of_Hungary_counties-2.svg. The polygons for the borders go actually in a kinda "cogwheel" order so that some going anticlockwise have their boundaries against the others going clockwise, rather in a toothed gearwheel manner, but that was just my pedantry; each county actually has its own borders as it did on the original, but on the original the borders for e.g Budapest to Pest County were a bit different from the borders of Pest County to Budapest, i.e. there was a gap or overlap, which now there is not in "my" version, they have all the coordinates bang on, as I did them all in hand in the XML not with some "snap it roughly to where it looks right" tool. All the bordering points have the same coords but the opposite directions (clockwise or widdershins) which helps the SVG polygon fill get it right without overlap or gap.
I think we should keep it and try to fix the labels and the "fix" coordinates for it. I suppose this was a labour of love but I think it does make it better than what is used in the infobox, it scales except for the text labels and the old one has errors in the border coords that leave gaps or overlaps, it just doesn't seem so at the scale used in infoboxes, as the rendering of the borders and the pushpins for the places are far larger than the errors, at even a large-screen resolution scale. If you blow it up and print it onto A0 (paper size) is is noticeable. Si Trew (talk) 17:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The text labels are fine on my I think 1972 across screen in full view. When I made this I think I had a 1024x768 screen. It's when the labels are all squished they don't scale down properly, and get all scrunched up, I have never quite worked out why. There is a style that governs it, and I tried all sorts of things but none worked. Si Trew (talk) 21:04, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to convert a tables of the Alpha Ethniki to 1998 and Gamma Ethniki to a module (modern table design)? --Jolicnikola (talk) 15:09, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

sure, it will take some time. it looks like the unconverted tables end at around 1997–98 Alpha Ethniki. I will try to convert what I find. Frietjes (talk) 16:02, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

help with transcludesection

I am trying to transclude a section of page, but instead of transcluding a section, it transclude all the <onlyinclude> sections. Can you help? I am trying to transclude {{:2019 Durand Cup|transcludesection = Group A}} in 2019–20 Bengaluru FC season page. Coderzombie (talk) 17:18, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Coderzombie, should work now. (1) all tables that could be transcluded must be tightly enclosed with <onlyinclude>...</onlyinclude> and (2) all tables inside of <onlyinclude>...</onlyinclude> must have |section=Group .... Frietjes (talk) 17:24, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I understand your logic, but I think there should have been more consensus. This may have some more consequences we are trying to avoid. If someone make changes in the page 2019 Durand Cup it can mess up pages that transclude it. I understand that same would happen in templates too, but templates are not edited as often as the pages itself. Coderzombie (talk) 17:37, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

LIU Sharks color

Hi Frietjes, I was just wondering if you could add to Module:College color the official colors of the new LIU Sharks team? I don't believe they've put out an official color yet, but I took an official logo from Google and used Paint to find that the blue color is #efb2e3 and the yellow color is #ffcc35. Thank you! PCN02WPS, edit requests for that module are usually made at Module talk:College color, where it looks like someone else has made a similar request but with different colors. Frietjes (talk) 13:05, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I was unaware of this; thank you! PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 13:07, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

TerraCyprus, It's in the tools section on the left. --Trialpears (talk) 12:57, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
yes, that's correct, it should be in the tools section on the left. it will ask you where to insert the gap, and shift the numbers down for you where necessary, stopping when it reaches another gap or the end of the infobox. if there is more than one infobox (or nested infoboxes) it will gap both at the same time. there is also the 'infobox renumber' button that removes gaps (so the opposite function). Minor updates

Good morning,

1. I think the changes at Template:Infobox company relating to |caption=, |image_caption=, and |logo_caption= are complete. That took many months for all the cases using caption to be found (at least I think it's done - there was a period where there were just a few more in the category daily and then suddenly there were 200 more one day. But I haven't seen any for a while, so I think you can fully remove |caption=. In addition to clearing up the ones where the caption was applied to the wrong image, there were many where caption was being used to display a slogan (which you know has been deprecated). Those are gone now, but of course we can't stop people from using logo_caption or image_caption for a slogan.

2. On the thumbfix script, can you add "static_image/static_image_caption" as another varient? That is the one I see most frequently that isn't handled.

Thanks for all the help. MB 14:51, 19 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

MB, I removed |caption= from {{infobox company}} and added something to the thumb fix script, but I don't have any test cases, so I am not sure if what I added worked. Frietjes (talk) 15:09, 19 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Season league table

Hi, I want to ask about 2017 Liga 1 table. Why did you put the table on the season league page instead of putting in separate template Template:2017 Liga 1 table like most of top 5 big world league? I'm sorry because I missed the WP:FOOTBALL talk and discussion about this. I mean it's fine for like seasons of Liga 2. Regards Wira rhea (talk) 22:33, 22 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wira rhea, most (if not all) of them are going to be merged with the parent articles per a discussion at WT:FOOTY. Frietjes (talk) 22:35, 22 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes well then, thanks for the explanation. Can you provide the discussion of that consensus? I just want to read it and I can't find it anywhere. I'll help you merging the table for Indonesian football league starting from 2018 season. Wira rhea (talk) 02:02, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wira rhea, as far as I can tell, the discussion started in this thread and then continued at WP:TFD (e.g, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, ... interestingly, this is continually being rehashed, including this thread from today. Frietjes (talk) 13:19, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fb cl bot

I have been thinking about attempting automatic conversion of the fb cl template family to Module:Sports table and would like to hear what you think about it as you've been doing some conversions manually. What do you think the biggest issues will be? My first impression is that it's more difficult than the aircraft specs mergers but will be able to convert a larger portion of templates. --Trialpears (talk) 22:17, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Trialpears, I have been doing about 300 per week using a script to do most of the work. the script is thousands of lines long, and still requires human eyes/input. there are several things that make this a difficult task to completely automate: (1) meaningful team abbreviations (attempts in the past have ignored this and just used ONE TWO THR or AAA BBB CCC which is suboptimal) (2) point notes (the last AWB attempt completely mangled most of these or missed them when they were outside of the table) (3) result notes (the last AWD attempt either mangled or ignored these, especially hard when they appear outside of the table) (4) use of ... or <ref>...</ref> or * for point notes, but not using the point note parameters (5) for team season articles, the tables should be transcluded from the parent league season or competition article. my fb.js script shows just a fraction of the complexity. I would rather just finish the conversions semi-manually, using my script. I should be done with the fb cl2 team templates in a few months. Frietjes (talk) 13:38, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes That sounds a lot more complicated than I thought and you're making really good progress. I guess there isn't much need for making a ridiculusly complicated bot. Thank you for doing this! --Trialpears (talk) 16:16, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Halo! Also pinging @Plastikspork: I see we're now using OSM map locators for a lot of articles which often don't really show where the building is located in a city or region without having to click it and zoom out. I was wondering if it could be coded so that you can zoom out with the mouse without having to click it? I think you should be able to glance at the infobox and get a rough idea of where it is without having to navigate, we already have the wiki globe for the same purpose.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:41, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User:Dr. Blofeld, the default zoom for {{infobox building}} is set to 13, but can be changed on an article-by-article basis using |mapframe-zoom=. if you would like to change the default, you should ask at template talk:infobox building, otherwise, you can use |mapframe-zoom= to set it for a particular article. Frietjes (talk) 21:48, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I think it should be default and allow more flexibility. I'll mention it tomorrow. Tot ziens! You are Dutch??♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:52, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User:Dr. Blofeld, note that it may be possible to dynamically adjust the zoom without leaving the article (similar to the radio buttons for the location maps) but that would require some additional coding and would probably increase the page source size (since you would be loading more than one map with different zoom levels). to make a more serious feature addition like that, you should probably ask at template talk:Infobox mapframe, which is what makes the maps. not dutch, but did study in Belgium, and love the fries. Frietjes (talk) 21:55, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have a question on this. I have never really liked these OSM maps by themselves and was wondering if they could be combined with location maps - i.e. display the OSM map (probably as default) as one the radio buttons along with other location maps. That would be a quick way to see bigger areas without zooming out the OSM map (which would still work as well). Before I propose this anywhere, do you think it is feasible to implement? MB 00:53, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Here is an example (from Infobox university) with both types of maps hacked-in rather than professionally being combined together. MB 01:19, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
User:MB, there was already a suggestion to allow for static map images in the list (see here). there is no reason why this couldn't include general objects (see Template:switcher). Frietjes (talk) 12:52, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'll get around to this. :-) Can you merge the name box I moved to the bottom of the page of Wuxi into the infobox in a collapisble section named "Transliterations". The length of the infobox and that combined was horrific, I'm trying to introduce a new, cleaner format.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:24, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Cyclist

Started getting articles like Bob Maitland in Category:Pages using infobox cyclist with atypical values for height or weight due to having fractions in height. The article hasn't changed, so some template/module must have changed? Is it correct to just remove the fraction and round to the closed inch? Do you know if there was any discussion about this? 2014–15 Barnet F.C. season

Hi Frietjes. Not sure if you're aware, but there is consensus (from many AfDs over the years) that club season articles in the Conference fail WP:NSEASONS. See the most recent AfD on one here (with several others linked). Cheers, Number 57 14:26, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User:Number 57, there are dozens of such articles, so it would seem like a good idea to delete all of them rather than prodding them one-by-one. Frietjes (talk) 14:28, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I hope there aren't that many, but I'll look at doing so in the next week or two. Number 57 14:36, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
User:Number 57, let me know if you want help creating a list, but you could start with look at the season directly before this one :) if that one had been deleted, I probably won't have created the one right after it. after all, finishing 8th in Conference Premier has to be less notable than finishing 1st in Conference Premier, but yet the 2013–14 article has been there since the 2013 season began. Frietjes (talk) 14:41, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
this search and then looking at matches with "season" in the title returns some interesting results, like the GAs 2008–09 York City F.C. season, 2009–10 York City F.C. season, 2010–11 York City F.C. season and 2011–12 York City F.C. season :) Frietjes (talk) 15:16, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I found the gallery tag produces the following structure on a page with nolines mode used, for example:

<ul class="gallery mw-gallery-nolines">
	<li class="gallerybox" style="width: 125px">
		<div style="width: 125px">
			<div class="thumb" style="width: 120px;">
			<div style="margin:0px auto;">(contains image)</div>
			</div>
			<div class="gallerytext">
			<p>(contains text)</p>
			</div>
		</div>
	</li>
</ul>

That means there is additional div element covering image and caption in a li element, but I don't know how to insert this div element while I try to edit the module, can you help me? Thanks. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 16:20, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Biblioteca marciana

Hello, I noticed your notification that the Marciana template was being considered for deletion and then, after a few hours, a substantial change to the info box. I was hoping to have the time to discuss the issue and find a solution. I had actually considered using the Library template and the building template but neither would have been adequate. You've combined them which may be a step in the right direction, but some of the categories don't quite fit. "Other designers" is not appropriate for the artists involved. Also, it seems that the collection consists just of classics and Venetian history whereas these are specializations. The Marciana has a full range of books. Most importantly, the whole box is now so long that it pushes all of the images further down the page, and they no longer correspond to the relevant text. It would help if you could remove the map. As a better solution (from my perspective) would it be possible to simply have the information on the Marciana page without involving a template?Venicescapes (talk) 20:37, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Infobox has been redone as a part of the article page. The categories are now appropriate to the Marciana. The template can be deleted.Venicescapes (talk) 06:18, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

okay, fixed those three issues. Frietjes (talk) 14:01, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It can work. Thank you. Should the same be done for Zecca of Venice and Loggetta del Sansovino? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Venicescapes (talkcontribs) 14:52, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Venicescapes, yes, converted. Frietjes (talk) 14:59, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. Thank you. Would it be possible to make the three infoboxes look alike? Main heading (Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana) inside the box instead of on top? Gray background only behind main heading on all three and not other headings?Venicescapes (talk) 15:27, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Venicescapes, if you want to change the styling of the headings you should request a change at Template talk:Infobox building and/or Template talk:Infobox library. changes that don't impact all the other articles are non-controversial and can be usually implemented without discussion, but changes to the box-location of the building name and colouring of the background requires discussion before changes. however, I will see if swapping the order of the infoboxes is better for you. Frietjes (talk) 16:02, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No, the institution infobox needs to precede the building infobox. Please do not change thatVenicescapes (talk) 16:24, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Can you suppress the gray on the Loggetta and Zecca pages?Venicescapes (talk) 16:27, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Venicescapes, not without changes to {{infobox building}} which would require discussion at Template talk:Infobox building. Frietjes (talk) 16:30, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Thank you for your help.Venicescapes (talk) 16:32, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please put the infobox as it was. The Library box needs to be first.Venicescapes (talk) 16:33, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
To have it as it was, can I just "undo" the last two changes?Venicescapes (talk) 16:41, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Venicescapes, you can if you want, but the library information is currently appearing first and it has the gray headers as you requested. Frietjes (talk) 16:42, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please let me know if you're spending too much time on this. The upper part looks great. Please don't alter it. If I understand correctly, the background shading is controlled by the template. So it is not possible to "pick and choose" which lines to highlight with background color. But in an earlier version you did, there was no gray anywhere, including in the lower (building) section. Is it still possible to remove all background color? Given the impossibility to use the shading in specific areas only, it would be best if there were none.Venicescapes (talk) 17:14, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you again. It's the best solution. As I now understand it, even if you insert another infobox, the basic scheme (layout and colors) is still determined by the initial infobox.

I'm currently working on a page that will require three nested building infoboxes. Are you the person I should contact in the event that I need assistance?Venicescapes (talk) 11:22, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

1990–91 Iraqi National League

Hi Frietjes, on the page 1990–91 Iraqi National League, the bottom three teams in the league table (Erbil, Al-Jaish, Al-Bahri) have their records listed as 0 matches, 0 wins, 0 draws, 0 losses etc. But in reality these teams each played 15 games (before withdrawing) and their matches were not annulled, they remained as part of the league table (although their W/D/L records are not known). So on the table it should be listed as 15 games played (not 0) and the other fields should just be blank because they are unknown. But I don't know how to implement this with the current template, can you assist? Hashim-afc (talk) 20:57, 6 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hashim-afc, okay, I added an option to override the number of matches in these cases like this. Frietjes (talk) 13:39, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I'm just wondering why you remove my edit on Freddie Mercury. Was my edit unnecessary? -- Thedarkknightli (talk) 20:56, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Color request for Module:Sports color/basketball

Hello - would you mind adding “Klosterneuburg Dukes” to the color list for Austria? Currently we have “Xion Klosterneuburg Dukes“ and the shorter alternative name is a bit more timeless. Same colors would remain. Thank you. Rikster2 (talk) 13:49, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2008 BWF World Junior Championships

Hi,

Just a heads-up your edits to 2008 BWF World Junior Championships have left a lot of broken images (lots of red-links)

I fixed the missing flags. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:15, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Jonesey95, thanks! any easy way we could get it to link directly to the Chinese Taipei article? I created a redirect, but a direct link would be better. thanks again. Frietjes (talk) 17:53, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so. The flag file that it calls is at File:Flag of Chinese Taipei for Olympic games.svg. If it were at File:Flag of Chinese Taipei.svg, it would probably work, but I don't think there are redirects for Files. I could be wrong. In any event, this looks like a political thicket (China/Taiwan/Taipei) that makes me a bit nervous. BTW, the page I changed to make the flag work was Module:Flags/MasterData; there might be something in there that controls the link text. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:11, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sports tables

Hey Frietjes, do you know how I can convert the table at 2007–2008 Israel Football League season to {{Fb cl header}} or similar? I couldn't find in the code an option to disable the GF, GA and GD columns. --Gonnym (talk) 12:18, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gonnym, I converted it to use sports table. If there are many that you just want to mark for conversion, but don't want to actually convert them yet, you can use {{fb cl2 header|for_against_style=none|ranking_style=none|nodraw=y|show_played=n}}. Frietjes (talk) 13:55, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again Frietjes! I've marked a few more with the template. Some of the tables have a(nother) different style though, such as 2010–2011 Israel Football League season with a division header, and columns for city and PF (points for) and PA (points against) which I assume are similar to GA/GF just using a different word. And 2017–2018 Israel Football League season, which has the PF/PA but no city or division header. Can the template support these so I can mark the rest of the seasons? --Gonnym (talk) 15:04, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Gonnym, for that first one you could use {{fb cl2 header|show_played=n|for_against_style=p|ranking_style=none|nodraw=y|grouptitle=City|title=North}} but you would need to swap the order of the team name and the city _or_ you could omit the |grouptitle=City and just merge the city name in parenthesis after the team name (the most common method). for the second one, {{fb cl2 header|show_played=n|for_against_style=p|ranking_style=none|nodraw=y}} should work. Frietjes (talk) 15:19, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks once more :) Finished the rest. --Gonnym (talk) 16:12, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

infobox width

Please see Tom Pidcock. It is in Category:Pages using infobox cyclist with multiple entries in single field due to descriptors after the team names. If the line-break is removed, the infobox is very wide. Do you have a better solution? MB 17:02, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect (I've never seen allow wrap before). Thanks. MB 18:49, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Something I noticed

I was wondering how many tables are possibly not using one of the deprecated sport templates, but a manual header which acts the same, so I've used hastemplate:"Tooltip" insource:/Goals against/ and it found 5,090 results. Probably not all are relevant, but it sure seems there are much more here. It's really a shame a bot can't use your code to help you out here. --Gonnym (talk) 14:51, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was wondering if you were able to help me out. I wanted to create a template ({{LebanonFG}}) in the same manner {{Soccerway}} is done, out of https://lebanonfg.com/. The default player page is https://lebanonfg.com/player/(number) (e.g. https://lebanonfg.com/player/27). I'm having difficulty in creating it on my own as there is too much code I don't understand. Let me know, thanks! Nehme1499 (talk) 15:34, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nehme1499 try taking the code from Template:FEF player and copying it to {{LebanonFG}} and changing the URL accordingly. that code doesn't use wikidata, so is probably much easier to read. Frietjes (talk)

Infobox images

The infoboxes in Attic Greek, Doric Greek, and Ionic Greek have thumbnail images coming from {{Ancient Greek dialects}}. Do you have a fix for this? Normally if an infobox has two images, I just move one outside the infobox. But here it seems reasonable to keep both. The template needs to display thumbs when used outside an infobox also. It is a little-used template, so probably not worth too much effort. MB 22:10, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Infobox basketball biography

Hi - I was wondering if you might be able to tell if the width of this infobox had been reduced recently? In the last few weeks I have seen an increasing number of player articles which suddenly see to wrap to a second line (in fields such as “high school” where they did not previously. Also, some cases where “nowrap” is used which looked fine before but now seem to cause spacing issues. I am trying to figure out if this is a result of the infobox itself or if it is a function of seeing pages on different displays. Thanks for any help you can give! Rikster2 (talk) 16:48, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rikster2, the last change to Template:Infobox basketball biography was on 8 September 2017. can you provide a link to a particular article that is wrapping where it wasn't previously. Frietjes (talk) 16:51, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The one that prompted me to ask the question was Larry Miller (basketball player). I removed the “no wrap” but never noticed the spacing issues it was causing. I last edited the same page in January - I think I would have noticed the issue then but maybe not. I’ve probably noticed the spacing issue with 30 or so articles in the last few weeks. Rikster2 (talk) 17:03, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Rikster2, if the articles have not changed and the infobox has not changed, there may be something different with your web browser. Maybe the window size, zoom level, default font, default font size, or something else has changed. Try looking at the same pages from a different browser, or from the same browser while you are logged out of Wikipedia. Something might provide a clue as to what may have changed on your end. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:05, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Rikster2, I checked the old version of that article on a windows laptop with three difference browsers, and they all wrap the content slightly differently. the overall width of the infobox is set, but how much each column occupies is up to the browser. removing the nowrap is generally a good idea since it reduces the likelihood of having a the box stretched past the standard width. so, it could be changes in your browser that you are seeing, or there could be some other change that I am unaware of. Page move for disambiguation of ICC Men's T20 World Cup

Hi, I would like to bring to your attention that, a page move is requested by me to rename 2020 ICC T20 World Cup to 2020 ICC Men's T20 World Cup as later is the official name by ICC and also the logo of the tournament specifically display the later name which is also used in the article, secondly, both the tournament is going to take place at the same country and also same year and also the ICC Women's T20 World Cup will be before men's tournament. Thirdly, to bring disambiguity to the name of both tournament. And also the parent page ICC T20 World Cup consistency. I would like to have your comment at the move discussion, if only you like to. Hi. While the {{Lebanon national football team results}} template works perfectly fine on PC view, on mobile it makes it so that pages such as Lebanon national football team results only display one word to the left of it, then the rest of the paragraph below it. Is there any way to put a screen width-based condition so that when the template is viewed on mobile, it becomes centered (and doesn't float on the right) so that the whole paragraph is on the bottom of it? Thanks in advance, Nehme1499 (talk) 15:53, 2 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nehme1499, we don't usually display sidebars and navboxes on mobile. this one was showing because it wasn't using {{sidebar}}, but I have now corrected that issue. Frietjes (talk) 13:32, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I got you. Thanks again for your help! Nehme1499 (talk) 13:47, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah also another quick question, more often than not the red table in the Record per opponent section in Lebanon national football team results doesn't show the totals (total games, WDL, win% etc...). Any reason why? Nehme1499 (talk) 16:07, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nehme1499, having content collapsed by default is not the best idea per MOS:COLLAPSE, so I would recommend changing wikitable sortable collapsible collapsed to wikitable sortable collapsible which makes collapsible an option, but not collapsed by default. Frietjes (talk) 16:09, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Should the same also be done for the tables below? And would adding the "collapsed" option be considered appropriate? Nehme1499 (talk) 16:30, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nehme1499, you can read MOS:COLLAPSE and decide. the key text is Collapsed or auto-collapsing cells or sections may be used with tables if it simply repeats information covered in the main text (or is purely supplementary, e.g. several past years of statistics in collapsed tables for comparison with a table of uncollapsed current stats). in my opinion, given the scope and length of the article, I would uncollapse them (the entire focus of the article is what is in the tables). Frietjes (talk) 16:33, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, makes sense. Thanks! Nehme1499 (talk) 16:36, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, for some reason the data for Asian competitions isn't available. Is there any way to add it? Thanks. Nehme1499 (talk) 20:35, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User:Nehme1499, sure, but can you verify that the list of parameters in the documentation are the desired parameters, and in the order that they should appear in the output? also, a list of the labels associated with the parameters would be useful. 22:00, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the parameters are correct and in the desired order. I would remove the last two parameters (biggest home/away win) as they aren't present in the other continent's infoboxes, and add the GCC Champions League as "gulf cup" below "asean cup". Nehme1499 (talk) 22:28, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
User:Nehme1499, should generally work now, but you should test all the parameters to make sure all all the label links are correct, and that it's working properly. Frietjes (talk) 22:46, 4 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion U5

You are an very experienced editor but please do not tag user pages with U5 if the page is a draft for a potential article. Module:Football box collapsible teamname

Please start new discussion, do not bundle after people have started discussing... GiantSnowman 14:41, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

GiantSnowman it's only used in one template, and that is the template being discussed. why do we need a separate discussion? Frietjes (talk) 14:43, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It is improper to start bundling after the discussion has begun. GiantSnowman 15:03, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
GiantSnowman normally, yes, but in this case, the module is only used by the template, so they should be discussed together. if we delete the module, without deleting the template, the template is broken. Frietjes (talk) 15:04, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Why didn't you bundle them at the start, not a day later? Adding a template on 12th to a discussion from 11th is off. GiantSnowman 15:05, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
GiantSnowman, I didn't notice the dependency until today. Frietjes (talk) 15:06, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you wish to nominate please list at today's page, not yesterday's. That is the whole point of having different days. GiantSnowman 15:19, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
GiantSnowman, but, in this case the two are intertwined, so having two discussions is pointless. Frietjes (talk) 15:21, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's abuse of process to bundle in the way you have. What's to stop an editor slipping in some last-minute bundling after the discussion has nearly concluded in order to get them deleted on the sly? I know this is not what you are doing, but we have processes for a reason. Please respect them. GiantSnowman 15:30, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Image size question

In an article like Pearland Town Center, I think the layout looks better if the one image under the infobox is the same width as the infobox. Do you know of a way to do this, without hard-coding image size in the image. MB 02:16, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

MB, you could put them both in the infobox like this or you could use |upright= to scale the bottom image to something larger like this. unfortunately, you cannot set image widths in em units and the infobox is set to be 22em wide. you could also resize the infobox image to something larger in px units and then make the lower image the same px units to match. but, this would not respect someone's personal thumbsize. Frietjes (talk) 14:26, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay... I was hoping there was something like a magicword variable that could be used set the image size, or maybe a wrapper like this which would size the image or images to the infobox. (in this example, the image happens to be about the same size as the infobox because the map is missing). MB 23:31, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
MB, there are basically two choices for sizing images: (1) use |upright=1.25 which makes the image 125% of the native thumb size, or (2) use a fixed size using px units for either the width (250px) or height (x175px) of the image. the only real exception to this is what we get from <gallery>...</gallery> with |mode=packed which can dynamically resize the images as you change the browser window size. so, to have the images the same size, they have to be using the same sizing method. the method used by {{infobox shopping mall}} is either the default thumb width (around 220px) or |image_width= which sets the size in px units. we could probably add |image_upright= to allow you to set the size of the image inside the infobox using "upright" scaling, but you would then need to use the same syntax for the image outside the box. finally, you could just put both the images in the infobox using {{multiple image}} with |border=infobox to get a frameless image array, but this doesn't seem to be your goal. by the way, it looks like the default frame width for the mapframe is around 270px, so you could use |image_width=270px if you want the mapframe to be the same size as the image (like this). Frietjes (talk) 00:11, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think that looks best. I do that sometimes with a small article and a single image under the infobox. But I usually guess at the size and "preview" and change the size and "preview" several times before I get them the same width. Even then, it's not permanent because the infobox width could change if say, a map is added, and they would be out of sync again. So ideally, it would be |image_width=same-as-infobox-width. OK, not a big deal. MB 04:02, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Shipwreck lists by month

Please would you a) stop changing the TOCs of these lists, and b) restore all changed TOCs to their original calendar form?

Firstly, your changes result in a massive page stretch, even at 170% on my laptop. Secondly, your changes make it very hard to work out dates when researching additions. Having the calendar format makes it dead easy to work out what date the Monday before 17th of June was, for example. Mjroots (talk) 04:01, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've now reverted all changes to the ToCs of the various shipwreck lists by month. You really should have raised a discussion at WikiProject level where a mass change is made that affects many hundreds of lists. Especially where such change has unfortunate side effects as the page stretch encountered - Only up to 22nd of the month was showing, the rest was off the edge of the page. The calendar table format has been in the lists since the first monthly list was created. It works just fine as it is, is compact and easy to navigate. Mjroots (talk) 07:37, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I endorse Mjroots comment, opinion and action Lyndaship (talk) 08:39, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Mjroots and Lyndaship, I switched the default mode to show the calendar, which required an edit in one place. now, can we compare the automatic version with your version? they both use the same table for the TOC, but the automatic version understands that 1 November 1862 was _not_ on a Monday! there are dozens of these with the wrong weekday. are there any other problems with the automatic version that need to be addressed? Frietjes (talk) 13:33, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
STOP - I put the correct calendar in on that list. The problem has been clearly explained. Your edits left every list with a massive page stretch, and removed the ability to determine dates. Mjroots (talk) 13:49, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Mjroots, okay, can we compare the automatic version with your version and tell me what needs to be changed with the automatic version? Frietjes (talk) 13:53, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That is not what I'm talking about. I spent nearly 3 hours this morning reverting your edits because each and every page was stretched, as detailed above.
With the example you've given above, the unknown date and references sections need to be in separate cells. Mjroots (talk) 13:58, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Mjroots, I can move the "unknown date" inside, but in some cases, it won't be in the same order as the sections appear in article, which is why I opted to put it at the end. I can also remove the link to the references section if you like, but I thought it was useful. I can certainly do this if these are strong preferences. perhaps we should continue this discussion at WT:SHIPS? Frietjes (talk) 14:02, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If there is to be a references section, how about making it a single row at the bottom of each calendar, spanning all seven columns? Although we've managed fine without it so far, I've no objection to it being included. By all means copy this over to WT:SHIPS if you wish to open the discussion out. Mjroots (talk) 14:07, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Mjroots, okay, I have opened a thread there, and sorry for the misunderstanding. I realised that there was a "nowrap" in the list version that should not have been there. I agree that I should have opened a thread at WT:SHIPS first. Frietjes (talk) 14:26, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've replied there, and made a suggestion re the unknown date / references issue. Mjroots (talk) 14:35, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Help updating parameter

Hi Frietjes - could you help with the “Women's Basketball Hall of Fame” parameter on two infoboxes? It appears the target website has changed the format of their HOF pages (example). It is used on Template:Infobox basketball biography (“womensHOF”) and Template:Infobox college coach (“WBHOF”). Thank you. Rikster2 (talk) 18:36, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rikster2, okay, it looks like all the new links match the pattern first-last (all lowercase) and the old links have mixed case, so a simple pattern match can find the bad links and put them in Category:Pages with incorrect WBHOF links. this tracking category will take some time to fill up. I have the code attempting to determine the linking page, but his autocorrect code is not going to be 100 percent accurate, so we will want to fix all the pages in Category:Pages with incorrect WBHOF links.Frietjes (talk) 18:54, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have started updating these and will continue when I have a bit more time. Rikster2 (talk) 19:41, 30 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

1860 shipwrecks

I've split the List of shipwrecks in 1860, using {{Calendar ToC}} in all cases. Calendars are correct, but for some reason its created bluelinks to all dates, instead of only those which have entries. Can you please take a look and make any necessary corrections? Mjroots (talk) 18:54, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mjroots, it should be fixed now. it was reading the commented out sections in the page source. Frietjes (talk) 18:57, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Opera Composer templates

I thank you for your effort to clean-up old unused / redundant opera navigation templates. Just for your info and as mentioned in the TFD, back in 2006, we (Wikipedia:WikiProject Opera) started with composer navigation template (old format) but over the time, we changed the format and positioned them at the bottom of opera articles, instead of on top right like the old one. It was a lot of work and was done by various authors including me. Once the new templates were done, we replaced the old one. However, please also note that some old templates are still in-used, probably because the author of the new template did not remove them when they added the new one. That makes it redundant because now we have 2 navigation templates for opera list on the top right (old template) and the bottom (new template). For less noted composers with only few opera / composition works, some of them do not have the new navigation template - still using the old one.

Most of old templates are in Category:Operas by composer templates. I said most because some of the new templates (the horizontal) are also here.
However, almost all new templates are in Category:Opera navboxes

There are altogether more than 150 old composer's templates (out of 157) to be deleted in Category:Operas by composer templates. To save time, perhaps you can propose for mass deletion instead of one by one? For the past years, I have been receiving requests for deletion for old templates. I of course agree for the deletion but isn't it better if we we could do it in one shot? - Jay (talk) 06:42, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jay, sure. my plan was to start with all the ones where the composer already has a horizontal navbox. for the ones where there is no horizontal navbox, I plan to convert them to horizontal navboxes first. I will ping you in the first mass deletion discussion. Frietjes (talk) 15:54, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe?

It looks like the internals of {{pb}} are mostly your work. I wonder whether you could share any thoughts about this question, which is about the best way to represent "multi-paragraph" replies in bulleted lists. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 06:33, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Opera templates

"duplicates footer" is correct, but some users are attached to these templates, for works by Handel and French opera. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:24, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you putting these templates up for deletion without opening discussion pages for them? Not the way to do things at all and I AM VEHEMENTLY OPPOSED TO THEIR DELETION. Smeat75 (talk) 21:53, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You have taken it on yourself to remove the unifying Handel template from almost all his articles. I have maintained these articles for years and find this HIGHLY objectionable and offensive, nothing short of vandalism. I suggest you consult with project Opera before embarking on any similar project. Thanks for making me waste a lot of time by restoring the template. GRRRR! I am furious!Smeat75 (talk) 22:13, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You have taken out the Handel template from all his articles, disfiguring them by not replacing them with any other image. Makes me SICK to see my hard work over years being undermined like this.Smeat75 (talk) 22:30, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
How dare you? Who the hell are you to mess them up?Smeat75 (talk) 22:48, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Smeat75: I merged your comments into this section. A quick look suggests you have a valid complaint but please take it easy and discuss the issue in a way that might lead to progress. Frietjes is a good editor who does a lot of very helpful work and they certainly are not doing anything that would qualify for what is known as vandalism here.
@Frietjes: As well as the TfD for many templates, I see a discussion at #Opera Composer templates above and another at WT:WikiProject Opera#60 old opera Navigation Templates for deletion in tFD. Has there been any other discussion? I looked at a couple of your recent mass deletions (for example Handel and Donizetti) and they seem unhelpful. Having redundant links might be irritating for some, but removing what serves as the infobox from many (hundreds?) of articles is going too far based on the weak discussions I linked. If you want to force the issue, I suggest withdrawing the TfD for now and starting an RfC about what should happen, starting with the two example diffs. Johnuniq (talk) 03:56, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Frietjes, what do you think of grouping the templates for deletion in 2, those still in use, and those used nowhere? Those in use deserve discussion. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:24, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Module issue

Hi Frietjes. Do you have any idea why the error message "Warning: Page using Template:Infobox election with unknown parameter "module" (this message is shown only in preview)." appears when editing articles like 2018 Republika Srpska general election (where one infobox is embedded in another)? The message only appears in preview mode and there doesn't actually seem to be any kind of error in the display of the infobox, so I can't work out what the error message is actually trying to say. Cheers, Number 57 14:13, 10 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Someone added |module= to the infobox template code but forgot to add it to the list of valid parameters. I have done that second step, so the article in question should not produce an error message now. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:44, 10 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your recent edit on User:McVahl/Template sandbox.

The objective of that sandbox is to convert Template:UAAPteam standings to use Module:Sports table.

I have some question about parameter usage for results and statuses.

In the converted template, I have these:

|col_F = green1 |text_F = Advance to the Finals
|col_2x = green2 |text_2x = Twice-to-beat in the semifinals
|col_SF = blue1 |text_SF = Twice-to-win in the semifinals

However, result "F" isn't used at most cases. So I often see warning messages: orphaned results = text_F and orphaned results = col_F

Is there any way to hide these when not used?

I have some test cases on my sandbox User:McVahl/sandbox in case you want to have a look. Thanks.  McVahl  Talk  01:39, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

User:McVahl, you could add |notracking=y but that would disable all tracking and warnings. I could probably make some changes so anything prefixed with IGNORE_ is ignored, but I don't know if that would easily fix your problem. I could also add something like |notrackresults=y just to ignore the orphaned results tracking. not sure what the best solution is for you. Frietjes (talk) 15:17, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I’d like the page not to be placed under Category:Pages using sports table with possibly ignored parameters as much as possible. I tried |notracking=y but it still appears on that category.  McVahl  Talk  15:39, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
User:McVahl, I don't see your pages in that category. Frietjes (talk) 15:45, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, my bad. It is on a different category now. :) I assume this category Category:Pages using sports table with notracking is for tracking purpose only, isn’t it? So is it fine if we have articles under this category? Unlike Category:Pages using sports table with unknown parameters needs to be empty as much as possible, right?  McVahl  Talk  15:58, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
User:McVahl, correct, that's just for review at a latter date in case we come up with solutions that don't require disabling tracking. Frietjes (talk) 16:00, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. Thanks a lot!  McVahl  Talk  16:01, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

hi Frietjes.

i noticed your edit summary on your latest edit to this module ("should use templatestyles").

i happen to be the originator of this module, though i haven't done much with it for the last several years, and i doubt it resemble my original version.

however, i did do quite a lot of other stuff related to showing chess on wikipedia (both lua and JS), and i wanted to suggest that there should be a better and simpler way to do what this module does - a lot of it has to do, as your summary indicates, with the introduction of templatestyles.

the "idea", or the "right way" to do it is demonstrated in mw:Module:ChessBowserPrototype (credit for showing me the light to User:Fred Gandt). this is a prototype for a (hopefully) up and coming extension meant to show full chess games interactively. you can see the demo-of-the-prototype-of-the-extension in mw:User:קיפודנחש/test.

this prototype contains, as a subset, everything module chessboard "done the right way" needs, and will show the chessboard even when JS is disabled, or the required JS module is not loaded (naturally, not the "interactive game" part). the extension will use php, but the prototype is mainly lua+css.

the templatestyle CSS is mw:Template:ChessBrowserProto/styles.css).

if you are interested, i'll be happy to discuss the details. the bottom line is that doing it this way leads to a significantly simpler module, and generates shorted, sweeter, cheaper and nicer html (e.g., no "img" elements so no [[File:this]] and [[File:that]]. as a free bonus, "reverse" (showing board from black POV) boils down to adding a single class to the wrapper div.

bottom line: following up on your comment will be significant improvement to the module, and to the html it squirts out. i will be very happy to discuss the details, help, or, if asked, even do some or most of the work. let me know if you's like to continue this discussion.

peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 00:42, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello kipod; although I am pleased to have helped a little in guiding your continued development of an interactive chess display done the right way, I really wish you'd have been more open to discussing the right way while my enthusiasm for the code was alive. I won't dwell on the "coulda, shoulda, woulda" of the past, but you've mentioned and directly messaged me about this several times since, and I feel it's about time I responded. Unfortunately I don't have anything useful to contribute beyond the scraps of code I wrote before, which are still available and free to use, abuse or ignore. My efforts to discuss how the implementation should be developed were dashed and the idea of getting involved again makes me feel bad. I hope something good eventually surfaces on Wikipedia, and wish you the best, but please stop pinging me about it (unless it's something specifically about the code I wrote and my input is needed). Thanks. Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 07:25, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Fred, thanks for linking me to those scraps of code. I didn't know there was a library to make gifs on the fly, but that's a really interesting option to consider for readers without javascript! Sorry that you've moved on, but your legacy is appreciated. Let me know if your feelings ever change. Wug·a·po·des 23:33, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Frietjes. I saw that you were the last person to edit the Sports table for Volleyball.

Since this has been used across most Volleyball tournaments, I was wondering if it would be possible to include automatic computation of the Sets Won and Sets Lost based on the Games won/lost.

Would like to get your thoughts on this. Thanks! (talk) 02:59, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Voncabriga how do you automatically calculate sets won and sets lost from games won and games lost? for example in Template:2004 Summer Olympics women's volleyball group A standings? Frietjes (talk) 19:49, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes in this template used before, wins and losses were categorized are 3-sets, 4-sets, 5-sets; 2 more categories than the current Volleyball sports table. Edit: just to complete the picture, this is the template used for the table header. (talk) 11:20, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes you may also check out how sets are auto-computed in this Volleyball page. Thanks again! (talk) 08:08, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Voncabriga I could probably add support for the various win categories since we already have "bwin" and "swin". I just need to know the input syntax, e.g. is it |3win_AAA= or |3-0win_AAA= or |3_0win_AAA= or ... Frietjes (talk) 14:37, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes in the sample page I referenced to, it used |w3_0=, |w3_1=, |w3_2=... We could use something similar to this to easily identify the the sets played and the points associated per game. Thank you so much for your feedback on this! (talk) 02:25, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Voncabriga that won't work because there is going to be more than one team, so if we can't use |w3_0= for both team AAA and BBB. Frietjes (talk) 13:37, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes Sorry, I wrote that just as an example. But in this page, it is already using the Volleyball Sports table, and each team was just defined in the template. So yes, if you are okay with auto-computing the Sets won/lost, it would just need support for each type of set win/loss. Thanks! 08:53, 6 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Voncabriga, okay, let me know when you have a suggestion for the input syntax. I can't really do anything until that has been decided. Frietjes (talk) 13:18, 6 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest to use parameters something like |win3s_AAA= for 3-set win, |win5s_AAA= for 5-set win, |loss4s_AAA= for 4-set loss, |loss3s_AAA= for 3-set loss. :)  McVahl  Talk  14:36, 6 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

McVahl, thank you. I will work on it shortly. Frietjes (talk) 14:37, 6 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thank you everyone for the inputs and for the support on this. (talk) 01:20, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

findargdups bug report - typo introduced

Hello, please see this edit by findargdups for the introduction of one misspelling to replace another; in particular, the double initial caps in POlice was changed by the bot to Pllice, not a serious problem in and of itself, but puzzling, and which may be based on some underlying fault which could have more serious consequences under other circumstances. (The other change in that edit, removing a reduplicated accessdate param, was accurate.)

Finally, it isn't clear where you want to receive bug reports for the bot. May I suggest a new section == How to report bugs == on your subpage where you specify where, and perhaps how, you wish to receive notices such as this one? Thanks for your bot; it has already improved more than one draft or article I've been involved in. Mathglot (talk) 21:30, 25 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) findargdups is a script, not a bot. It does not make edits on its own; it only indicates what the problem template is. A human, in this case Freezer Bernie, used the script to find and correctly remove the duplicate |accessdate=, and then apparently made a typo while attempting to change "O" to "o" (they are only one character apart on the keyboard). – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:00, 25 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops. Sorry about the typo. Just fixed it. Freezer Bernie (talk) 22:04, 25 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Jonesey95, thanks for that, it explains a lot. Freezer Bernie, It's nbd, but thanks for the fix! Mathglot (talk) 06:31, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

findargdups editing user space

Please see this edit that just happened on my user subpage where I'm developing an article. Not only should the script have not edited a template in my workspace, but it shouldn't remove "last=" from a template where there is also a "first=" left behind. A minor thing, but why is it editing citation templates in my user space? It happened a few days ago on another user subpage of mine, and I just thought somebody just erred. Pleases fix the script, of whatever makes it not recognize user space. — Maile (talk) 21:19, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

See the "bug report" section two sections above for an explanation. The script does not make edits. In this case, a human editor used the script to remove a duplicate, empty |last= parameter from the template that contained |last=US Government. If you look at the version before that helpful edit, you will see that "US Government" was not shown as an author in that citation, because the template contained a second |last= that was empty. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:28, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

NPB Template Parameter help

Hi there, I know you've done a lot of work with sports templates and I believe you were the original creator of the roster template for NPB clubs. I'm trying to clean all this up now and I was hoping to add a "coaches" parameter so I can list the 1st and 2nd team coaches. Would you be able to adjust this at all? Template:NPB roster. I'm referring to the larger boxes that you can see at List of current Nippon Professional Baseball team rosters. Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Cynikles (talk) 00:19, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cynikles, do you want both Coaches and Manager to appear at the same time, or do you want only one possible at the same time? Frietjes (talk) 00:33, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes, I'd like it so it's similar to the MLB templates where both manager and coach appear at the same time. Does that make sense?Cynikles (talk) 00:35, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cynikles, okay, |Coaches= should work, but may have some minor whitespace issues. Frietjes (talk) 00:37, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes, that's great! thank you. Would it be possible also to do |Coaches2= and potentially |Manager3=, |Coaches3=?
Cynikles, okay, |Coaches2= should work. not sure where |Manager3= and |Coaches3= would go. Frietjes (talk) 14:33, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Frietjes, thank you! I think adding the third team would take a rethink of the template, but we'll leave it for now. Many thanks!Cynikles (talk) 23:24, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Module:Sports results

Hoi. Tvx1 20:18, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tvx1, I think I fixed it. there were basically two problems: (1) in some places the module was using nl:sjabloon:efn and nl:sjabloon:notelist and in some places it was using nl:sjabloon:refn, and (2) the nl:sjabloon:efn and nl:sjabloon:notelist templates are not correct (or at least not consistent with the nl:template:refn template). I made some minor changes to nl:sjabloon:efn and nl:sjabloon:notelist, but my changes were not really correct. since you were the one who originally imported those templates, I would suggest re-importing them and translating the groups (e.g., 'lower-alpha' in template:efn should be 'kleine-letter' in nl:template:efn, etc.). since efn/notelist are only used on three pages right now, it should be pretty easy to make sure you don't break anything. Frietjes (talk) 14:44, 23 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Module:Sports rbr table

Hi, I'm from bnwiki. Could you tell me, in this Module:Sports rbr table which line give the final result for table? For example following line produce header number:

			:wikitext(args['rnd' .. (r + (firstround - 1))]
				or (r + (firstround - 1)))

So, on bnwiki i did this. You can see here that because of that header is showing number in Bengali. I need to find that line which produce the number in the table, so i can add a convert digit module there. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 20:22, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

আফতাবুজ্জামান, on line 367 you should be able to change (legend_symbols[posrt] or posrt) to (legend_symbols[posrt] or convert('bn', tostring(posrt))) assuming that the convert function does nothing when the input isn't a number. I can give you another method if you need to make sure it's a number before sending it through the convert. I would leave the first posrt in the legend_symbols alone since that is going to generally be for non-numbers. Frietjes (talk) 20:34, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
আফতাবুজ্জামান, by the way, what you did for the rnd line made it so |rnd1= doesn't work (only works if you use |rnd১= which is a mix of Bengali and non-Bengali, but if that's fine, then no problems. Frietjes (talk) 20:36, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, it worked (yes, convert function won't do anything when the input isn't a number). As you found a problem with my edit, how can i fix that? I dont want to convert |rnd1= to |rnd১=. I just want to convert the header (i would leave parameter as it is). --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 20:52, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
in that case, I would suggest using :wikitext(convert('bn', tostring(args['rnd' .. (r + (firstround - 1))] or (r + (firstround - 1))))) or in other words, pass everything that's being sent to wikitext to the convert function first. you can test if it worked by trying |rnd1=0 in preview mode (without saving :)). Frietjes (talk) 20:57, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you again, it worked :) --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 21:12, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox

Nice for you to stop by at my sandbox. I have been trying to do the track listing for the soundtrack for the film of 7 Samurai, when I noticed that the French interwiki article already had it done, but with unusable French code instructions. I then started to transfer them one by one using a Korean film soundtrack from English Wikipedia as a template when you stopped by for your edit. This is moving at a snail's pace for me and maybe you have a better idea for "transferring" the French table into English Wikipedia source. The original French source code and the English soundtrack template are side by side in my sandbox now. Otherwise, I'll continue with the snail's pace approach for the 35 tracks. I see that pages using misc and logo/logo_size cause separate subcategories in the bad parameters category for this template. Any reason that I shouldn't autowikibrowser all of those parameter away?Naraht (talk) 14:47, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Naraht, it looks like |misc= was removed by Bagumba in 2017 as WP:FANCRUFT. given that there have been no objections (as far as I can tell) for the past 8 years, it's probably fine to remove it from the articles. you could ask at WT:NBA and see if are any opinions there. I have not been able to find any version of the infobox that included logo (just the documentation including logo) so I would think that is definitely safe to remove. I agree that it looks like fancruft. and I've removed similar before. I just wanted to check in with you since subcats on the bad parameters cats are something that I hadn't run into before.Naraht (talk) 15:08, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Naraht, the subcats were just to make the main cat more readable and find more serious errors. Frietjes (talk) 15:10, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I wish more infoboxes had that setup for common/removed parameters. Thanx.Naraht (talk) 15:16, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
