:I nominate Einar aka Carptrash as Editor of the Week. In early Dec I contacted him about editing the Post Office Murals article which he had started back in Dec 2011. As is the way of things here at WP we began to collaborate on a new artcle, the List of United States post office murals. We both immersed ourselves into creating the article and had a wonderful time. I learned many new things from "Carp" and know I will learn many more as we both expand articles related to "The List". I was searching for something more formidable and long-lasting to do as an editor and, with his sharing and input and mentoring, I have found my "niche". Thank you, Einar, for the 285 articles you have created.

hello Bub

How's the library business? You'll see that I flicked a crumb off the surface of that Châteauesque article, which you seem to have adopted, in your legendary fashion. D is damn near halfway through law school and honing her skills on "Litigation: the Home Game", but still retains some reassuring gaps in her knowledge. It's growing colder at night and Portland around Homecoming looks like a Norman Rockwell autumn, achingly photogenic, if you can picture a Norman Rockwell autumn peopled by whippet-thin hepcats with sideburns, tattooed piercings and heavy black-frame glasses. Life is rich and strange. There are actually adult kickball leagues up here. Hope you're well, truly. --Lockley (talk) 08:03, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that the list of significant fountains would work better as a table. I, for one, want to be able to see an image of each and be able to compare them. If you agree, I'll start it. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 16:17, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm starting a table. If you really hate it, you can revert. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 17:14, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Decide if you like it. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 17:42, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like I just vandalized the page. Moving things into the table uses a lot fewer bytes. Feel free to fill in as you wish. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 21:32, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you can do right or left, or stack them. I had a lot of fun with the table on the Oval Office. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 21:44, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. You're very kind. I'd rather work toward making something better than stew in frustration over it. And it's satisfying. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 21:56, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Philadelphia has a Total Abstinence Fountain left over from the Centennial that's about 50 feet in diameter with lots of sculpture. I created a "Category:Drinking fountains" to put these Temperance fountains. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 23:39, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a couple hours ahead of you (and yes, I do get obsessed). Odd that I can't find a PD image of the Thatcher Fountain. Maybe HABS or SIRIS. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 17:29, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'm going to back off for now, so we don't get into more edit conflicts. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 17:43, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know whether it's good art or not, but I'm particularly fond of this work by Stirling Calder: [1] Freshman year in college, I lived about 100 feet away, and walked by it every day. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 23:15, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree on dropping "History" from the title of the article. It can be a subject heading. I added the Calder to the Drinking fountains in the United States, along with links to images of works still under copyright. I should start an article on the Centre Square Waterworks; technologically, it's important, and there are nice images. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 12:47, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Unexpected situation in New Orleans. There are TWO Hyams Memorial Fountains in the city, seemingly identical, both with the same Isidore Konti sculptures, but located in different parks:[2] Who wudda thunk? == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 02:33, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I care. And I'm glad you started them. (Although it's taken time for me to really appreciate them.)
SIRIS only lists one Hyams fountain, which is why it surprised me. I don't know if it was the donor's directive or a cost-saving measure (duplicate statues are cheaper?), but it does seem odd to have identical fountains in the same city only miles apart.
Sorry about the plumbing problems. Nothing funny about that. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 02:16, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have access to JSTOR, but I've noticed some of their articles are now free (all, not just the 1st page). == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 18:09, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted a sentence you added to the fountains article. The William Rush sculptures Allegorical Figure of the Schuylkill River and Allegorical Figure of the Waterworks are both from 1825. They were never part of the Centre Square Waterworks (1801). Philadelphia outgrew the capacity of the single water tower by the 1810s, and built a reservoir on a hill called "Fairmount," now the site of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Fairmount Waterworks was built along the Schuylkill River to pump water up to the reservoir. The two later sculptures were architectural pieces, installed atop two small pavilions.[3] To my knowledge they never adorned fountains. Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 19:01, 24 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations on the bookcases. One can never have too many. Regarding Rush's Water Nymph and Bittern (a bittern is a water bird common on the Schuylkill), a bronze casting was made of the wooden statue, I think in the early 1870s. The bronze casting became the centerpiece of a fountain at the Fairmount Waterworks. Thomas Eakins found the original wooden statue rotting away in storage, and became obsessed with it, leading to his 4 William Rush paintings. The head of the wooden statue survives at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 03:21, 25 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have a good friend who's an Eakins scholar, and she argues that Rush probably did not use a nude model. Eakins either assumed/imagined that Rush had, or co-opted the Rush legend to promote what he had been taught in Paris -- the necessity of working from the nude. The most interesting artifact of Eakins's obsession with Rush is the unfinished painting in Honolulu, where Eakins seems to paint himself as Rush.[4] == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 16:37, 25 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Granted, it's MUCH more fun. My username came from my niece and nephews, after I gave a detailed critique of an obscure American history YouTube video. I prefer to think that they intended that the history was boring, rather than the guy. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 19:44, 25 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We have talked about it, more than 2 years ago. I know it's not why you brought it up, but I intended to visit the PMA library to see if they have a full list of the sculptors. (Which I expect they do.) My Eakins scholar works at PMA (and is a delightful luncheon companion). She's urged me to come down, but I haven't been there in about 3 years. High time to go. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 02:00, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I did some research in the library about 10 years ago, the librarian, Susan Anderson (another Scandanavian?), was very helpful. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 23:16, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A US Work pre 1923 is Public domain.

Assuming that both works (statute and photo) are first published in the US , I don't see an issue.

Cite the sources used, and use the credit line the book gives for the indivdiaul photos (if any).

Post Office Murals

Hey Carptrash. Nice to meet you. As you probably noticed I have been adding to the list of Post Office Murals artists. I noticed that you started the list back in Dec 2011. I'm getting most of my names from http://postalmuseum.si.edu/indiansatthepostoffice/mural12.html. I'm tempted to put a reference with each artist (at least for the ones I have added and the ones I will be adding). I don't know how long the list will get or if that is a problem. Please let me know what you think. I appreciate your efforts and wish to collaborate. Ed aka Buster Seven Talk 20:22, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for starting this article. Would you consider a name change to "List of U.S. post office murals"? - "U.S." for obvious reasons, plus lowercase "post office murals" per WP:TITLE (see: United States post office murals). Just a thought. 32.218.34.24 (talk) 00:47, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures of public domain objects

Hi Carptrash. When uploading images of three-dimensional public domain objects such as statues, in addition to a copyright tag specifying the copyright status of the statue, please include a copyright tag for the photo as well. An example of how to do this is at File:1909 Indian Cent NGC MS65RD Obverse.png. Please add a copyright tag to File:William Coleman Memorial Fountain, Sacramento, California, USA, Ralph Stackpole, sculptor.jpg. Thanks, -- Diannaa (talk) 02:13, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Thanks

...I did not see that you running for anything there, or elsewhere for that matter..."

Well it isn't like I didn't want to be in the running for military historian of the year, but the community hasn't nominated me for the award in years (like four or five to be precise) . I had hoped I would at least be nominated this year, but it didn't happen. I guess that's life, and its not the end of the world. At the end of the day it doesn't much change who I am or what I do here, the process merely demonstrates the barometer the project's contributors places on who has done what to warrant a nod and a shot at the year's top awards. TomStar81 (Talk) 03:00, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I took a glance,TomStar81, at your user page to see what would occur to me and what happened is that I'd find it difficult, if not impossible, to support anyone who feels that Pres. O is holding this nation hostage. Ideally this sort of thing should not make a difference, but I don't live in an ideal world.Carptrash (talk) 03:12, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Everyone be entitled to their opinion, and I grant that this may stop people from looking at me seriously, although you'd think that since Wikipedia operates mostly as a meritocracy there would be some room for forgiveness in people's hearts. Hell I know editors I hardly get along with on here at all and yet I ask them to help when I know that they know better than I do on a given matter. Still, though, you're probably right that it likely isn't doing me any favors. TomStar81 (Talk) 03:19, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

After

the hub-bub of the holidays we'll have to converse about how to gather Images, etc. I understand that because the artist's were government employees their Images are Public Domain I just don't know the "How to..." of moving them from where I find them on the Internet to WP:Commons. There is so much to do and I think useful info is getting lost (by me) in the process of creating the List. I'm collecting Artist Bio stuff at User talk:Buster7/sandbox for future work and, not always, but every now and then, when I go to an Existing Artist WP Article, I'll add info about the mural...but only sometimes. My way seems haphazard and sporadic. I guess I'm asking how you store and categorize all the gobs of info that comes in front of you when your doing a project like The List. I guess I know The List is a long term commitment and I want to start doing things the easiest way. Like I said...mid-January or so...```Buster Seven Talk 16:51, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Piping down the valleys wild

OK - I'll keep that in mind if/when I take another look. (If they haven't been fixed already, I can go ahead and fix the ones I did yesterday.)

Happy to be of help - it's an interesting subject. I like the way the list is coming along. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:18, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed 'em both. As to photos, there's not a lot I can do on that front. (I can try and get some shots of the murals in Arlington in situ...that's the only post office near at hand to me. I can eventually hit some of the ones in the valley - Strasburg, Luray - but that will take more time, and wherewithal that I don't have at the moment.)
What I can do is to add NRHP designations to the list, as I did with Arlington. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:16, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps add a NRHP in the notes? I suspect that most of these post offices will be there, so perhaps it needs another column? Carptrash (talk)
I set up a NRHP column in Alabama - both you check it out and see what you think.Carptrash (talk) 19:33, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
👍 Like ```Buster Seven Talk 19:56, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed - it looks great. Maybe a way to distinguish between listed buildings and buildings which are contributing properties to the historic district? Unless the column is for links to articles, in which case never mind. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:06, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What I am thinking, and this NEVER makes it so, is that a YES in that column, if it's a blue link could be a link to either an article about the building or the district that it is a part of. Make sense? Carptrash (talk) 20:18, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Carptrash: Enjoy your tea. I can get the NRHP column tomorrow for all while I'm at the Library....(for eight Hours!!!!!) ```Buster Seven Talk 22:33, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ive only created a few articles in my time, maybe 6, and have never used the "Articles for Creation" pages before. I thought, "What the Heck!", it might be a good idea to learn what a new editor goes thru to get his/her article into WP. I wonder if you (and any friendlies) could swing by there and take a look and tell me what it needs. If you add something, do it in small bites so I can see how it gets done and I can mimic it in the future for other articles. If you could add an "Infobox for artist"...that would be great. I don't know how to do that. I'm gonna add another Reference or two 'cause Ive heard that the more references the better as far as passing the submission process. Thanks! No, to quote Sargent Schultz, "I know nothing!" about that interesting site. Another goldmine? Meanwhile, having 3,000 articles on my watch list, I have been enticed into creating a new article, New Formalism (architecture) - out of a discussion at Stripped Classicism. And then Mom woke up in the middle of everything, so it has been a wild morning so far. And yes, our, "little" project has been immensely satisfying and is bordering on a life long venture. I have a binder somewhere of my mural slides, but have not been able to locate it since my move. My guru was fond of saying. "Life is supposed to be interesting. This is how the universe expands." Carptrash (talk) 19:00, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree. There is no foreseeable end to this project and it already has expanded my life...WP and real. My wife and I have even started to write a rough draft for a novel, The Muralist, about a multi-personality serial killer that is as charming as can be until someone criticizes his work. Love, Sex and great tunes from the '30s and '40s (for the Movie adaptation). He goes from town to town over the life of "the Section of Fine Arts" assuming different names (there are so many interesting ones to choose from) and wardrobes and interesting "peccadilloes---->(busterism). Johnny Depp would be perfect for the part. TRA! ```Buster Seven Talk 20:30, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(artist)

This morning the disam bot told me about 5 or 6 which I took care of. But it reminded me to let you know why I am adding (artist) and letting it "show up" on The List. In a week or two we will be done with the basic Info and we will {individually) "wander" around the List, fixing things, filling in gaps, researching for NRHP listings (two of the PO disams from this morning are NRHP but I didn't take the time to add them to The List, etc. etc. We will continue our collaboration and chop away at the many options available as to "what to do first". For me, it changes everyday. So...I thought that by letting {artist) show up on The List I would create article for those artists first...gotta start somewhere. Feel free to let me know if one task is more important than another. I'm In Plano, IL today. TRA!```Buster Seven Talk

So here's what I just ran into, updating an artist (Edward Laning). The New York Times. in his obit, has him painting murals for the Works Progress Administration. Since his PO mural was not under the WPA but the Federal Art Project should I remove a NYT reference as being unreliable? I think not. I will just add my own. But you are right, we have a ton of cleanup to do and then . . . ... let the (stub) games begin. Carptrash (talk) 15:50, 2 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You will have to go into teacher mode when the stub games begin....I'll just watch what you do and repeat.```Buster Seven Talk 22:29, 2 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Half-way thru NY

Unless I'm mistaken (which has/does/will happen) as soon as I finish New York (which should happen Tomorrow) I think we have all the 50 states + DC. Then the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Finito-Stage One. Agreed??? ```Buster Seven Talk 01:04, 3 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
After That my plan is to go thru, from top to bottom, and check for any little editing fixes or mis-directed Blue links or whatever I find. I don't think there are many at all since we both seemed to clean-up each state once we finished it. ```Buster Seven Talk 01:14, 3 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have had intermittent Internet serviced for a few days. A 'Tech" is coming today. Before I lose connection, I noticed that some of the states in the List do not have references. I forget which one of us did them so I'm reluctant to just plug in the one I used most...Living New Deal. The states are SoDakota, SoCarolina, Road Island, Port-o-rico, Penn., and Oreegone. Can you ref the ones you did? I'll assume the ones you leave un-done will be the ones I did. TRA! Buster Seven Talk 15:43, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. Some day (over a beer or two is best) I'll tell you about the Duffeeland Dog Park Club, but it is taking a lot of time now, hopefully that ends soon. I don't mind putting my reference on everything unreferenced because it is pretty much the same info as you have. I also need to reference the NRHP info with I am getting from one web site. A very good one. Carptrash (talk) 01:40, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
tech is gone. He plugged in a new modem and every thing is fine. BTW...I believe you are in Albuquerque. My daughter attended U of New Mexico for her Masters in Education. So....we visited her a few times and loved the desert. I took the Draft:Ida Abelman articles live just a minute ago and within seconds a BOT clamped onto it. I could use some of your expertise and maybe a re-write. Thanks. Buster Seven Talk 14:36, 11 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help w/ Ida above. How do YOU create a new bio article? Do you create it off-WP and then cut-n-paste it here? In order to forego all the potential problems that a new article experiences, I've started another new mural artist article at User talk:Buster7/Sandbox-Rosa's law. I figure this way I can work on the article trouble free, you can help me understand better than the other (more formal) way, and when its ready, I'll just Cut-n-paste it into mainspace. Good Idea? or is there a better way? Buster Seven Talk 15:11, 12 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I moved User talk:Buster7/Sandbox-Rosa's law. I will now create asst "User:B7/I.Ema.Artist" type pages. Buster Seven Talk
I saw that you have created a "Works in Progress (WiP)" section on your User Page. Great Idea! I have done the same on mine. This way we can check each others work so we don't duplicate efforts. Ive also added a mention of the "WiP" pages at the Mens List and at the Womens List. My problem is that I forget where I put stuff...I need a note to remind me where the note that reminds me is.... I know I started a "WiP" page on Frances Ankrom somewhere but I can't remember where. Did Edith Barry go live? TRA!Buster Seven Talk 15:50, 14 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edith Barry

The book Wall-to-Wall America says that she was from Kennebunk----"Edith Barry was a local girl." (Pg. 272)....not from nearby Kennebunkport. I'll await your confirmation before changing the article and the List#Maine entry which states the mural is in Kennebunkport.Buster Seven Talk 08:58, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have two copies, hard cover and paperback, of Wall to Wall America and can't find either. Go ahead and add that info and reference. I believe that she was a KKennebunk "woman" and to a girl, having moved there after she was married. But it is a nice quote, so belongs. Carptrash (talk) 15:28, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also, this 6 is a sort of amusing bit about trying to move the article. Carptrash (talk) 15:34, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So...I guess the message is that That way of creating an article is fraught with problems and should be avoided. Drat! Buster Seven Talk 19:48, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A way around it

 1. . you create a draft...like this...User:Buster7/Joseph Fleck,
 2. . when its ready, you cut and paste the whole thing,
 3. . put "Joseph Fleck" in the search box which will bring up the "There is no-such article" page,
 4. . create the new page...and bingo...Bob's your uncle. Buster Seven Talk 19:58, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
 5. . you put {-{db-user}-} on the draft...and in seconds it disappears.
Joseph Fleck has gone "live". ...User:Buster7/Joseph Fleck has been terminated. Buster Seven Talk 23:20, 15 January 2015 (UTC),[reply]

Belle Baranceanu

I spent a little time this morning at Belle Baranceanu and I have a general "Should I make a change" question. I think the Sections are miss-labeled. What is called "Notes" should be called "References" and what is called "References" should be called "See also". Wouldn't that be more consistent with most other WP "bios"??? Buster Seven Talk 14:41, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just replaced the "Notes" heading with "References". 2 of the 3 previous "references" were included in the notes section already. One got left off. Carptrash (talk) 16:52, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dead White men

Responding to your question on my talk page, When the prior editor wrote that "Sculptor Janet Scudder had DWM's roles as subjects for sculpture in mind when ........." they were presuming to summarize what was thereafter quoted. However neither the actual term used "DWM"[sic], nor the term 'deceased white men' were actually used by the author quoted, thus effectively making the quote the opinion of the editor/quoter, not the person quoted. Thank you for not reverting my edit. QuintBy (talk) 04:33, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Strange pairing

What a bizarre juxtaposition it is to build a fountain featuring centaurs and mythical creatures alongside a sculpture group depicting a historical event. Certainly, Saint-Gaudens loved to insert his goddesses, but they represented the goals/ideals/accomplishments of the sculpture's subject. I'm sure there are other examples of strange pairings, but this strikes me as particularly odd. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 18:26, 12 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

these two groups were done a very different times and were only paired here for reasons that line in someone else's brain. And yes, it is a bit disconcerting where you are there. Carptrash (talk) 19:34, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your application at WP:SLR

Hello Carptrash, I saw your application, but I'm sorry that the project is now defunct. I tried to close it when the Sri Lanka Civil War ended, but some people felt it was better to keep it open, but de facto nobody was watching it, so your application got overlooked. I just saw it now that I'm writing a comment about it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Editor Retention#where else would an exclusive, member-restricted WikiProject help? . — Sebastian 10:26, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for getting back to me about the WikiProject Sri Lanka Reconciliation. Sri Lanka and what happened there has always been a difficult thing for me. I lived in Sri Lanka - then Ceylon. from 1952 until 1965 and found the Civli war to be a very distressing topic. but on that I would on occasion want to engage in. Anyway, thai you for the update. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 19:40, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That must have been an interesting time, during the first steps of a newly independent country. Since you have a serious interest, I will approve your application, and since I believe it very unlikely that there will be objections, you would be a member just in time for the project to close. When I wrote my message to you, I felt ambivalent about using the word "sorry". On one hand, I am sorry that it ended, because for me it was a very meaningful and rewarding time. On the other hand, the reason that it ended is that the civil war ended, which is even more than I dared to dream when we started the project. — Sebastian 20:25, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for sterling work on postal articles, and helping another editor develop a "niche". Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Buster7 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Einar aka Carptrash as Editor of the Week.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:
