My 58 Progress

Been dealing with the gaps on the doors. Ended up having to replace ALL the door hinge pins. 50 years old and they wear out? WTF?

Silver paint goes on Monday.....then off the upholstery shop where the red leather seats get installed, with oatmeal carpet and then the engine gets slammed in....woohoo....

Stainless Steel sport muffler. I believe it's a Dansk.

It is a beauty. I've got an old single out Bursch and want to go back to the twin outlet.

If you are handy with a welder and a sawzall you can make one.....that unit is about 500 bucks, retail. I stole it in a trade.....a pair of Knecht air cleaners got me that bad boy.

About the ONLY deal I've gotten. EVERYTHING pertaining to 356s are made a freakin' gold.

That is going to look great Mike. The "A's" just have that sleeker, lower to the ground look with the front end. What a CLASSIC color combo. Good choice!

What are your plans for the car? Stock? Carrera-look? Outlaw?

Keep us posted.

Since it has an original drive train and the Cardex backs up the claim....I'm doing my first close to Concours restoration. It's killing me....but except for the muffler...it's gonna be stock.

Sounds great! Have you thought about Charcoal carpets instead of Oatmeal? The Charcoal really brings out the red and goes really nice with the Silver. I'm almost done with mine. Here's A pic.

Mike,
How did your door gaps turn out after the new pins got installed? How is the gap at the upper door/front fender area? That was my big problem area on my 57. I had a gap of about 8mm in one part. I had to add metal to the door and fender to end up with 3mm all around. Trying to get all the gaps right is a very time consuming task, but well worth it in the end. Great job Mike.

Mark, you said you had to add metal to get the gaps even. I am going to be tackling this job in the next couple of months. I used to weld many years ago but I know that modern welders are far superior to what I was using. What welder, and gauge of metal is ideal?

I use a Lincoln Electric, Model SP-125, .030 wire with a gas blend of 75% argon and 25% carbon dioxide. The steel I use is a cold rolled sheet, 16 gauge, 0.060" thick. I have the sheets cut for lengths of 12" up to 36" as needed. I have them sheered to end up about 5mm to 8mm wide. Weld on to the area you need to fill in and then grind and shape. Very time consuming.
This works for me. Might not be the correct way.
Didn't mean to high-jack your thread Mike.

That's cool, that's what we are doing. The restoration pieces from Stoddard were less than perfect and needed a LOT of massaging to get right.

btw, more on gaps....the factory also added metal to get them right. They used lead. These were truly hand built cars.

Did you put POR15 over newly replaced floors? or over existing?

I'll be done with mine this weekend. Looking for ideas on how to protect them.

Getting there...the gaps were a real pisser. Hopefully the chromer won't bend me over too badly.....the upholstery in red will really set the silver off. It looks kinda blah right now.....

Where did you add metal on the gaps? To the door itself or the body?
